The Towering Inferno is a 1974 American disaster film directed by John Guillermin, with Irwin Allen directing the action sequences. Starring Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, William Holden, Faye Dunaway, Fred Astaire, Susan Blakely, Richard Chamberlain, Jennifer Jones, Robert Vaughn, Robert Wagner and O. J. Simpson, the film centres on the opening night of the fictional Glass Tower in San Francisco, the tallest building in the world. When faulty wiring causes a fire high inside the skyscraper, the celebration turns into a massive rescue operation. The film became one of the defining disaster movies of the 1970s, combining all-star spectacle with fire, panic, engineering failure and large-scale suspense.
The film is set in San Francisco, and the city gives the fictional Glass Tower a strong real-world identity, even though much of the production was completed at the Fox studio lot in Los Angeles. The exterior entrance of the Glass Tower was filmed at the Bank of America World Headquarters at 555 California Street, while the dramatic lobby with glass elevators was filmed at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco at 5 Embarcadero Center. Other San Francisco locations include Pacific Heights, where Roger Simmonsโ house was filmed on Vallejo Street, along with skyline and civic views that place the disaster firmly within the city. The tower itself was also created through large-scale sets, miniatures and studio work, allowing the production to combine real San Francisco architecture with controlled fire effects and elaborate rescue sequences. This mix of city locations, modern high-rise interiors and studio-built catastrophe gives The Towering Inferno its distinctive feeling of urban glamour turning into vertical disaster.
