Joker is a 2019 psychological thriller directed by Todd Phillips and starring Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck, a lonely and mentally fragile man who gradually transforms into the figure who will become Gothamโs most infamous criminal. Rather than presenting a conventional comic-book spectacle, the film works as a bleak character study shaped by alienation, humiliation, mental collapse and social unrest. Its grim tone, stripped-back style and Phoenixโs central performance made it one of the most talked-about films of its year and gave the character a very different screen identity from earlier versions.
Although the story is set in the fictional Gotham City, the film was shot mainly in New York City, with additional work in New Jersey and studio filming in Brooklyn. Some of the most recognisable locations were used in the Bronx, especially the staircase on West 167th Street between Anderson and Shakespeare Avenues, which became one of the filmโs defining visual motifs. Other documented locations include the Brooklyn Army Terminal in Sunset Park, used for Arkham State Hospital, Harlem locations for the Ha-Haโs office material, and Steiner Studios at the Brooklyn Navy Yard for the television-studio scenes. The film also reached beyond New York proper, using Newark in New Jersey for parts of its decaying urban Gotham imagery. Altogether, the locations give Joker a very grounded and gritty East Coast feel, built from real streets, transit spaces, institutional buildings and worn neighbourhood corners rather than glossy comic-book fantasy.
