Joaquin Phoenix (born 28 October 1974) is an American actor known for intense, psychologically detailed performances and a career defined by bold role choices. He began acting as a child alongside his siblings and gained early attention under the name Leaf Phoenix, appearing in films such as Parenthood (1989). After stepping away from acting briefly in his teens, he returned in the 1990s and steadily built a reputation as one of the most distinctive actors of his generation.

Phoenix earned major critical recognition for roles in films such as To Die For (1995) and Gladiator (2000), the latter bringing him an Academy Award nomination for playing the Roman emperor Commodus.
