Elling (2001) is a Norwegian comedy-drama directed by Petter Nรฆss, based mainly on Ingvar Ambjรธrnsenโ€™s novel “Brรธdre i blodet”. The film follows Elling and Kjell Bjarne, two men who have lived together at the Brรธynes institution and are given a municipal flat in Oslo as part of their return to ordinary society. Per Christian Ellefsen plays Elling, an anxious, intelligent and socially withdrawn man with a strong inner life, while Sven Nordin plays Kjell Bjarne, his more direct and physically imposing roommate. Their new life in the city becomes a series of small but enormous challenges: answering the phone, going outside, shopping, eating in public, meeting neighbours and learning how to build a life without the routines of the institution. Although the film is comic, it is also a warm and sympathetic story about friendship, vulnerability, independence and the courage required to take part in everyday life. Elling became one of the best-known Norwegian films of its period and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

Elling is closely tied to Oslo, especially the Majorstua area, where Elling and Kjell Bjarne are given their council flat. The film does not use Oslo as a tourist postcard, but as an ordinary urban environment made up of apartment buildings, shops, pavements, cafรฉs, restaurants and street corners. This is important to the filmโ€™s tone, because the places are not dramatic in themselves; they become dramatic because Elling experiences normal city life as something almost overwhelming. The grocery shop where he hides his poems in packets of sauerkraut, the restaurant where crossing the floor feels like a major expedition, the streets around the flat and the everyday neighbourhood spaces all become part of Elling and Kjell Bjarneโ€™s gradual movement into the outside world. Majorstua gives the film a recognisable Oslo setting, but it is used in a quiet and grounded way, reflecting the charactersโ€™ small steps rather than large external events. The result is a film where the central location identity comes from ordinary city life: a flat, a staircase, a shop, a table in a restaurant and the surrounding streets become the places where two frightened men slowly learn to live independently.
