Dexter is an American crime drama series that ran from 2006 to 2013, with Michael C. Hall starring as Dexter Morgan, a blood-spatter analyst for Miami Metro Police who also lives a secret life as a vigilante serial killer. The series is built around the contradiction between Dexterโs calm, controlled public persona and the violent โDark Passengerโ he hides from everyone around him. Across its eight seasons, the show mixes police procedural elements, psychological drama and black humour, while using Dexterโs inner narration to explore questions of identity, morality, trauma and whether someone shaped by violence can ever truly live a normal life.
Although Dexter is set in Miami, much of the series was filmed in Los Angeles and Long Beach, California, with selected Miami-area locations used to give the show its South Florida identity. Dexterโs apartment exterior was filmed at the Bay Harbor Club on Bay Harbor Island near Miami Beach, while Ocean Drive, Biscayne Bay, Virginia Key and other Miami locations helped establish the showโs tropical, sunlit atmosphere. As the series continued, Long Beach became especially important as a stand-in for Miami, with its waterfront areas, residential streets, marinas and civic buildings used for many exterior scenes. This gives the series an interesting visual split: the story belongs unmistakably to Miami, with its heat, water, pastel colours and sense of hidden violence beneath bright surfaces, but much of that world was built through Southern California locations carefully chosen to resemble South Florida.
