Batman (1989) is an American superhero film directed by Tim Burton, based on the DC Comics character. Michael Keaton stars as Bruce Wayne and Batman, a reclusive billionaire who secretly protects Gotham City as a masked vigilante. Jack Nicholson plays Jack Napier, a gangster who is transformed into the Joker after falling into a vat of chemicals during a confrontation with Batman. Kim Basinger appears as photojournalist Vicki Vale, while Michael Gough, Pat Hingle, Billy Dee Williams, Jack Palance and Robert Wuhl appear in supporting roles. The film was a major turning point for modern superhero cinema, replacing the brighter pop-art tone associated with earlier screen versions of Batman with a darker, gothic and more stylised world of crime, trauma, media spectacle and urban corruption.
Batman is set in Gotham City, but the film was made mainly in England, with Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire serving as the main production base. Much of Gotham was not filmed in a real city at all, but built as a vast backlot and soundstage environment designed by Anton Furst, whose city combined gothic architecture, industrial decay, expressionist angles and exaggerated urban scale. This gives the film one of the most distinctive versions of Gotham: a city that feels like New York, a European nightmare, a comic-book drawing and an old studio metropolis at the same time. Wayne Manor was created from two Hertfordshire locations. Knebworth House was used for the gothic exterior of Bruce Wayne’s home, while Hatfield House provided the main interior rooms, including the Long Gallery, Marble Hall and library material. The Axis Chemicals scenes, where Jack Napier becomes the Joker, were filmed partly at the disused Acton Lane Power Station in West London, with additional power-station material at Little Barford in Bedfordshire. London was also used for smaller interiors, including St Pancras Renaissance Hotel as the Gotham Globe office. The film’s location identity is therefore built less from ordinary real-world streets and more from constructed atmosphere: Pinewood’s monumental Gotham sets, English country houses, old power stations and London interiors are combined to create a dark, theatrical city that could only exist in Tim Burton’s Batman universe.
