Dirty Harry is a 1971 American crime thriller directed by Don Siegel and starring Clint Eastwood as San Francisco police inspector Harry Callahan. The film follows Callahan as he hunts Scorpio, a sadistic sniper and kidnapper loosely inspired by the real fear surrounding the Zodiac Killer case. With its hard-edged violence, morally blunt hero and famous โ€œDo I feel lucky?โ€ confrontation, the film became one of the defining urban thrillers of the 1970s and launched the long-running Dirty Harry series. It also helped cement Eastwoodโ€™s screen image as a laconic, uncompromising antihero operating in a world where legal procedure and street justice are constantly in conflict.

The film was shot largely on location in San Francisco, and the city is essential to its cold, tense atmosphere. Key locations include the rooftop pool of the Holiday Inn Chinatown for the opening sniper sequence, the area around Saints Peter and Paul Church in North Beach, Washington Square, the narrow alleys of Krausgrill Place and Medau Place, Forest Hill Station, Fort Mason Tunnel, Dolores Park, San Francisco City Hall, the Hall of Justice at 850 Bryant Street, and Kezar Stadium in Golden Gate Park. Mount Davidson and its large concrete cross become central to the ransom sequence, while the later stadium scenes turn the then-empty Kezar into one of the filmโ€™s most unsettling spaces. Rather than using San Francisco only for scenic views, Dirty Harry makes the city feel exposed and dangerous, moving through rooftops, churches, tunnels, parks, police buildings, stadiums and steep urban streets as Harry closes in on Scorpio.
