Two Pines Chapel in Hi Vista, near Lancaster, California, is the small desert church best known from Quentin Tarantinoโs “Kill Bill” films. The building stands at 19809 East Avenue G, in the Los Angeles County portion of the Mojave Desert, surrounded by flat open land, scrub, Joshua trees and long empty roads. Its isolated position gives it a strange and exposed quality, making it feel like a place completely cut off from the outside world. Although the name Two Pines Chapel belongs to the film, the building is widely recognised today by that screen identity.
Two Pines Chapel appears in Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003) and Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (2004), where it is the site of the wedding rehearsal massacre that sets the entire revenge story in motion. The building had appeared in earlier productions as well, including True Confessions (1981) and the music video for Talking Headsโ “Road to Nowhere” (1985), but it is the “Kill Bill” connection that made it a major cult film location.
In True Confessions (1981), the building appears as a small church in the opening and closing parts of the film. The production added the Mission-style faรงade that later became one of the locationโs most recognisable features, helping transform the former community hall into something that could read more clearly as a church on screen. This earlier alteration is part of why the building was later so effective as Two Pines Chapel.
In Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003), Two Pines Chapel is seen after the massacre has already taken place. The Bride, played by Uma Thurman, lies badly wounded among the bodies after Bill and the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad have attacked the wedding rehearsal. The quiet desert chapel becomes the scene of sudden, brutal violence, and the sequence immediately establishes the mystery and trauma behind the Brideโs revenge.
In Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (2004), the chapel is shown in more detail through the events leading up to the massacre. Beatrix Kiddo is rehearsing her wedding to Tommy Plympton when Bill appears, followed by the rest of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad. The peaceful, almost absurdly ordinary setting of a small desert chapel makes the attack feel even more shocking. Because the location is so isolated, the massacre feels private and inescapable, as if no help could possibly arrive in time.
