Inferno is a 2016 mystery thriller directed by Ron Howard and the third film in the Robert Langdon series, with Tom Hanks returning as the Harvard symbologist. This time Langdon wakes up in Florence with memory loss and quickly finds himself pulled into a race against time involving Dante, coded clues, transhumanism and a plot that could unleash a catastrophic biological threat. Compared with The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons, the film leans even more heavily into pursuit, conspiracy and historical symbolism, using famous European landmarks as integral parts of the story rather than mere backdrop.
The film was shot across Florence, Venice, Budapest and Istanbul, with Florence providing the most important real-world setting. In Florence, the production used places such as Palazzo Vecchio, the Boboli Gardens, Palazzo Pitti, Porta Romana and the Baptistery, all of which tie directly into Langdonโs movement through the cityโs Renaissance and medieval landmarks. Venice then supplies another major stretch of the story, with scenes at St. Markโs Basilica, St. Markโs Square and along the Grand Canal, while Istanbul brings in the climactic historical setting through Hagia Sophia and the Basilica Cistern. Budapest also served as a major production base, with studio work and stand-in interiors used to support the larger European journey. Altogether, the film builds its atmosphere through a mix of monumental churches, palaces, gardens, canals and underground spaces, giving it a more tangible and historically rooted sense of place than many modern thrillers.
