Tom’s Restaurant is a diner at 2880 Broadway, on the corner of West 112th Street in Morningside Heights, Manhattan. It has been family-run since the 1940s and is one of New York’s best-known television façades. Although the interior is that of a real neighbourhood diner, its greatest screen fame comes from its exterior, which became instantly recognisable through Seinfeld.
Tom’s Restaurant appears in Seinfeld (1989–1998), where it serves as the exterior of Monk’s Café, the regular meeting place for Jerry, George, Elaine, and Kramer. The real diner is in New York, while the interior restaurant scenes for the series were filmed on a studio set in Los Angeles.
In Seinfeld (1989–1998), Tom’s Restaurant is seen in the recurring exterior establishing shots of Monk’s Café. It appears throughout the series as one of its standard visual markers, even though the inside of Monk’s does not match the real diner. In early episodes, the neon “Tom’s” sign was more clearly visible, while later shots framed the building more tightly so the façade played more convincingly as the fictional café.
