Nathan’s Famous is the original Coney Island hot dog stand and restaurant at Surf Avenue and Stillwell Avenue in Brooklyn, New York. Nathan Handwerker opened the business in 1916, selling nickel hot dogs from a small stand that later grew into one of Coney Island’s best-known landmarks. Its large yellow-and-green signage, corner position, proximity to the boardwalk and association with the annual Fourth of July hot dog-eating contest have made it part of the visual identity of Coney Island.

Nathan’s Famous is closely tied to films and TV productions set in Coney Island. The location is visible or directly referenced in productions including The Lords of Flatbush (1974), The Pick-up Artist (1987), Two Lovers (2008), The Other Guys (2010), and Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017).

In The Lords of Flatbush (1974), Nathan’s Famous appears as part of the film’s Coney Island and Brooklyn street setting. The film follows a group of working-class Brooklyn teenagers in the late 1950s, and the Coney Island material helps ground the story in a recognisable outer-borough world of diners, streets, boardwalks and teenage hangouts. Nathan’s works well here as a period-appropriate Brooklyn landmark rather than just a food stand in the background.

In The Pick-up Artist (1987), Nathan’s Famous is tied to Molly Ringwald’s Coney Island surroundings. Her character, Randy Jensen, lives in the area, and Nathan’s appears as part of the neighbourhood geography around her home. The restaurant’s bright signage and busy corner help place the film in the older amusement-district side of Brooklyn, contrasting with the more polished Manhattan settings elsewhere in the story.

In Two Lovers (2008), Nathan’s Famous appears during the Coney Island section of the film. The location fits the film’s use of Brighton Beach and Coney Island as lived-in Brooklyn spaces rather than tourist scenery. Its familiar signage and street-corner presence help anchor the characters in a real neighbourhood environment, close to the boardwalk and the older amusement-area landscape.

In Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Nathan’s Famous appears in the Coney Island climax after the Vulture’s aircraft crashes near the amusement district. The film uses Coney Island as the setting for the final battle, with the boardwalk, rides and surrounding landmarks placing the action in a recognisable Brooklyn location. Nathan’s belongs to this sequence when the film moves through the streets and amusement-area geography around Surf Avenue and Stillwell Avenue, while wider action shots should also be connected to Coney Island, Luna Park or the Cyclone depending on what is visible.

In The Other Guys (2010), Nathan’s Famous was used for a deleted cameo scene featuring former New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter. The film’s backstory has Terry Hoitz being demoted to a desk job after accidentally shooting Jeter in the leg during the World Series. The deleted scene returns to that joke years later, showing Jeter outside Nathan’s Famous at Coney Island as a homeless man asking for money. The scene was cut from the theatrical version, but it has appeared online and as bonus/deleted-scene material.
