Castillo de San Marcos is a historic Spanish stone fort in St. Augustine, Florida. Construction began in 1672, making it the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States. The fort stands on the western shore of Matanzas Bay and is built from coquina, a local shellstone that helped the structure absorb cannon fire rather than shatter under impact. Its star-shaped layout, thick walls, gun deck, moat, courtyard and waterfront position have made it one of the most recognisable historic landmarks in Florida. The fort has also appeared on screen as military forts, colonial strongholds and historic waterfront architecture, especially in productions using St. Augustine’s older Spanish and coastal character.

Castillo de San Marcos has appeared in Distant Drums (1951), Illegally Yours (1988) and several early silent films made in and around St. Augustine. During the silent-film period, filmmakers used the city’s old Spanish architecture and fortifications to stand in for other historic or foreign settings, with the Castillo sometimes transformed into places far removed from Florida. The fort’s most documented feature-film use is Distant Drums, where it becomes a military stronghold in a Second Seminole War story.

In Distant Drums (1951), Castillo de San Marcos appears as Fort Infanta. The film stars Gary Cooper as Captain Quincy Wyatt, who leads a mission to destroy a fort being used by Spanish gunrunners during the Second Seminole War. The Castillo’s walls, courtyard and military architecture are used to give the fictional fort real historical weight, before the story moves into the Florida wilderness and Everglades pursuit material. The location is especially important because the film uses the real St. Augustine fort as an active part of the action, not just as a background landmark.

In Illegally Yours (1988), Castillo de San Marcos appears as part of the film’s St. Augustine location work. The comedy uses several recognisable places around the city, including the former St. Johns County Courthouse, St. Augustine Lighthouse and the Castillo. The fort is part of the film’s broader use of St. Augustine as a screen setting, where the city’s historic buildings and waterfront landmarks are visible throughout the story.
