Where Eagles Dare (1968) is a British-American Second World War action adventure film directed by Brian G. Hutton and written by Alistair MacLean, who also wrote the novel of the same name. The film stars Richard Burton as Major John Smith and Clint Eastwood as Lieutenant Morris Schaffer, part of an Allied commando team sent into the Bavarian Alps to rescue an American general held at the supposedly inaccessible fortress Schloss Adler. As the mission develops, the rescue operation becomes a layered espionage plot involving false identities, double agents and shifting loyalties. The film is known for its large-scale mountain setting, cable-car action, snow-covered atmosphere, Ron Goodwinโs score and the contrast between Burtonโs controlled intelligence-officer role and Eastwoodโs more direct action-hero presence. It remains one of the best-known war adventure films of the late 1960s.
Where Eagles Dare was filmed mainly in Austria, with studio work completed in England. The fictional Schloss Adler was represented by Burg Hohenwerfen, the medieval fortress above Werfen in the Salzburg region. Although the film makes the castle appear to be reached by a dramatic cable car, there is no cable car to Hohenwerfen; the cable-car sequences were filmed separately at the Feuerkogel Seilbahn in Ebensee, with additional close-ups, models and studio effects used to combine the fortress and cable-car material into one fictional location. The village scenes were filmed in Lofer, including Villa Egger, which appears as the inn marked โGasthaus zum Wilden Hirschenโ. The airfield material was filmed at Aigen im Ennstal in Styria, while other Austrian mountain and snow scenes used the surrounding Alpine landscape to create the filmโs Bavarian setting. MGM-British Studios at Borehamwood in England was used for interior sets, effects shots and controlled action material. The result is a film where the location work is central to the adventure: real Austrian castles, villages, snowfields and cable-car stations are combined with studio construction and visual effects to create the isolated, dangerous world of Schloss Adler.
