Unlawful Entry is a 1992 psychological thriller directed by Jonathan Kaplan, starring Kurt Russell, Madeleine Stowe and Ray Liotta. The film follows Michael and Karen Carr, a Los Angeles couple whose home is broken into one night, leaving Karen traumatised and the couple suddenly dependent on the police for protection. Officer Pete Davis initially seems helpful and reassuring, but his interest in the Carrs soon becomes obsessive, especially toward Karen. The film belongs to the early-1990s wave of domestic and psychological thrillers, but it adds an extra layer of unease by turning the figure of protection into the source of danger, with Ray Liottaโs performance giving the story much of its menace.
The film was shot in and around Los Angeles, which fits its atmosphere of suburban comfort under threat. The Carr residence was filmed at 546 Wilcox Avenue, giving the story a recognisable residential Los Angeles setting rather than an anonymous thriller house. Other locations include The Mayan on South Hill Street as Michaelโs club, Doris Place Elementary School for Karenโs workplace, Lincoln Heights Jail for the jail sequence, and additional police, street and restaurant locations around the city. Together, these places create a grounded Los Angeles world of homes, schools, clubs, police spaces and night streets, making the threat feel close to ordinary domestic life rather than distant or abstract.
