Entourage (2004–2011) is an American comedy-drama series created by Doug Ellin for HBO. The series follows Vincent Chase, a young actor from Queens who becomes a major Hollywood star, and the close group of friends who follow him into the film industry’s inner circle. Eric Murphy acts as Vince’s manager and closest adviser, Johnny “Drama” Chase is his older half-brother and struggling actor, while Turtle is the loyal friend who enjoys the perks of Vince’s success before gradually building his own identity. Jeremy Piven’s Ari Gold became one of the series’ defining figures as Vince’s aggressive and fast-talking agent. Loosely inspired by Mark Wahlberg’s early years in Hollywood, Entourage became closely associated with celebrity cameos, industry satire, male friendship and the glossy culture of Los Angeles entertainment in the 2000s.
Entourage was filmed largely in Los Angeles, where the real geography of Hollywood, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Malibu and the surrounding area became a central part of the series. Instead of treating Los Angeles as a generic background, the series uses the city’s restaurants, cafés, clubs, offices, hotels, hillside homes and beach locations as part of its entertainment-industry world. Urth Caffé in West Hollywood became one of the most recognisable recurring hangouts, while places such as the Pacific Design Center, The Viper Room, Whisky a Go Go, Malibu Lagoon State Beach, Los Angeles International Airport, The Orpheum Theatre and various Hollywood Hills residences helped establish the show’s sense of place. The locations reflect the characters’ movement through different levels of Los Angeles life: casual cafés and nightlife spots, luxury homes, agent offices, red-carpet events, film-industry meetings and coastal escapes. This gives Entourage a strong location identity, built around a heightened but recognisable version of Los Angeles where work, friendship, celebrity and status are constantly connected to the places the characters move through.
