Any Given Sunday (1999) is an American sports drama directed by Oliver Stone. The film follows the fictional professional American football team the Miami Sharks, led by veteran head coach Tony D’Amato, played by Al Pacino. The team is struggling with injuries, internal conflict, ownership pressure and a changing sports culture where business, celebrity and media are beginning to challenge old ideas of loyalty and teamwork. Jamie Foxx plays rising quarterback Willie Beamen, whose sudden success threatens the place of ageing star Jack “Cap” Rooney, played by Dennis Quaid, while Cameron Diaz appears as Christina Pagniacci, the ambitious young team owner. The film also features James Woods, LL Cool J, Matthew Modine, Jim Brown, Ann-Margret, Lauren Holly, Elizabeth Berkley and Charlton Heston. With its aggressive editing, stylised game sequences and cynical view of professional sport, Any Given Sunday presents American football as both a physical battlefield and a corporate entertainment machine.
Any Given Sunday was filmed mainly in Florida and Texas, with Miami forming the centre of the film’s fictional football world. The Miami Orange Bowl was used as the home stadium of the Miami Sharks, giving the team a real Miami landmark as its base. The stadium stood at 1501 NW 3rd Street until it was demolished in 2008, and the site is now occupied by LoanDepot Park. Joe Robbie Stadium, later known as Pro Player Stadium and now Hard Rock Stadium, was used for other football material, including scenes connected to the California Crusaders. The film also uses several recognisable Miami locations outside the stadiums. Villa Vizcaya in Coconut Grove appears as the setting for the mayor’s party, while the Cardozo Hotel on Ocean Drive is used for the South Beach nightclub scene involving Willie Beamen. Additional filming took place around Homestead, including Homestead Sports Complex, and studio work was carried out at Greenwich Studios in Miami. Texas was used for the climactic game against the Dallas Knights, with Texas Stadium in Irving standing in as the Knights’ home ground. This gives the film a location identity built around large sports arenas, Miami nightlife, coastal wealth, locker rooms, training facilities and the spectacle of professional football as both sport and show business.
