Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (2013) is an American comedy directed by Adam McKay and the sequel to Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. Will Ferrell returns as Ron Burgundy, joined again by Christina Applegate as Veronica Corningstone, Paul Rudd as Brian Fantana, Steve Carell as Brick Tamland and David Koechner as Champ Kind. The story moves the Channel 4 news team out of 1970s San Diego and into the early 1980s world of cable television, when Ron is recruited by a new 24-hour news network in New York. The film satirises the rise of sensationalist news, ratings-driven broadcasting, celebrity anchors and the transformation of television journalism into entertainment. Like the first film, it is built around absurd dialogue, improvisational comedy, fake broadcast professionalism and the inflated ego of Ron Burgundy himself.
Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues is set mainly in New York, but much of the film was shot in Georgia, with Atlanta doubling for 1980s New York. Downtown Atlanta was dressed with yellow taxis, period storefronts, graffiti, payphones, old magazines and New York-style newspaper stands to create the cable-news world Ron Burgundy enters. Woodruff Park in downtown Atlanta is one of the film’s most recognisable locations, used for the large news-team battle near the end of the film, where Ron and his colleagues face rival news crews in a chaotic street fight. Peachtree Street and the area around the Flatiron Building were also used for New York-set street material. Emory University’s Briarcliff Campus appears in the film as part of the production’s Atlanta location work, chosen partly for its mid-century modern architecture. Other Georgia locations were used for additional scenes, including coastal material connected to the film’s shark sequence. The production also used real New York locations, including the area around Rockefeller Center for the fictional GNN/WBC-style broadcasting world, and San Diego locations for material connected to Ron’s earlier life and the dolphin show sequence. The result is a comedy whose location identity is partly real and partly artificial: New York is the story’s new media centre, Atlanta supplies much of the period city texture, and San Diego remains part of Ron Burgundy’s absurd personal mythology.
