28 Years Later is a 2025 post-apocalyptic horror film directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland, continuing the world first introduced in 28 Days Later (2002) and 28 Weeks Later (2007). Set nearly three decades after the rage virus outbreak, the film follows survivors living in a harsh, altered Britain where infection, isolation and new forms of human society have reshaped the country. With Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Alfie Williams and Ralph Fiennes among the cast, the film moves away from the urban collapse of the original and into a more rural, folk-horror-inflected vision of survival, where old landscapes, ritual, violence and fear have become part of everyday life.

The film was shot mainly in northern England, with Northumberland playing the central role in its visual identity. Holy Island of Lindisfarne became the fortified survivor community, using the real tidal causeway and island setting to create a natural sense of isolation and danger. Other Northumberland locations included Hexham, Bellingham, Rothbury, Kielder Forest and Plankey Mill Farm near Langley and Bardon Mill, while additional filming took place in Newcastle upon Tyne, Waskerley in County Durham, and several North Yorkshire locations including Ripon, Fountains Abbey, Aysgarth Falls, Redmire, Melsonby and Stanwick. Cheddar Gorge in Somerset and Glenfinnan in Scotland were also used, while the Sycamore Gap tree at Hadrianโ€™s Wall was digitally reconstructed for the film after the real tree was felled in 2023. Altogether, the production builds its post-apocalyptic Britain from tidal islands, ruined religious sites, forests, farms, waterfalls, ancient landscapes and exposed northern countryside, giving the film a very different geographical character from the London-based terror of 28 Days Later.
