Tom Hanks (born 9 July 1956) is an American actor, producer and filmmaker widely regarded as one of Hollywood’s most respected performers. He rose to prominence in the 1980s with comedies such as Splash and Big, before earning consecutive Academy Awards for Best Actor for Philadelphia (1993) and Forrest Gump (1994). Hanks has since starred in a long run of critically and commercially successful films, including Apollo 13, Saving Private Ryan, Cast Away, The Green Mile, and the Toy Story series as the voice of Woody. Beyond acting, he has produced and co-created major historical miniseries like Band of Brothers and The Pacific, and he continues to work across film, television and theatre while also writing and championing a range of cultural and charitable projects.
