Four Aces Movie Ranch is a purpose-built film location at 14499 East Avenue Q in the Antelope Valley east of Palmdale, California. Although the buildings resemble the remains of an isolated mid-century highway stop, they were constructed specifically for film and photography rather than as a functioning motel, restaurant or filling station. A permanent movie set was established on the property around 1998, occupying a small part of the otherwise largely undeveloped desert site. The complex combines a 1940s-style diner, a weathered Route 66-style gas station, a honky-tonk bar with a small casino area and an atomic-age roadside motel, complete with reception office, furnished rooms, bathrooms, period signage, working neon and other props. The buildings can be photographed individually or as a single roadside complex, while the surrounding Joshua trees, empty roads, dry washes and rocky mountains allow the location to represent isolated parts of California, Nevada, Arizona, Texas and other areas of the American Southwest. Its combination of standing interiors and exteriors has made Four Aces one of the Antelope Valleyโs most frequently reused production locations since the late 1990s.
Four Aces Movie Ranch has appeared in Buffy the Vampire Slayer (2001), House of 1000 Corpses (2003), Identity (2003), The O.C. (2006), Moonlight (2007), NCIS (2008), Lady Gaga and Beyoncรฉโs music video ยซTelephoneยป (2010), My Chemical Romanceโs ยซNa Na Naยป (2010), Red Velvetโs ยซIce Cream Cakeยป (2015), Twin Peaks: The Return (2017), Palm Springs (2020), Fall (2022) and The Last Stop in Yuma County (2023). The same small collection of buildings has consequently portrayed everything from an abandoned refuge and a Nevada murder motel to Captain Spauldingโs roadside attraction, a South Dakota motel, a desert gas station and an Arizona diner. In several cases the filmmakers substantially redressed the buildings, while productions such as The Last Stop in Yuma County used the existing layout of the ranch so extensively that the location became fundamental to the story itself.
In Buffy the Vampire Slayer (2001), Four Aces Movie Ranch appears in the season-five episode ยซSpiralยป as the isolated roadside refuge where Buffy Summers and her friends take shelter while fleeing Sunnydale with Dawn. After the Knights of Byzantium attack their motorhome in the desert and Giles is seriously wounded, the group reaches the abandoned roadside buildings and barricades themselves inside. Willow uses magic to create a protective barrier around the refuge while the Knights surround the property, turning the otherwise empty desert stop into the setting for a siege. Ben is eventually summoned to treat Giles, only for his transformation into Glory to place Dawn directly in danger. Four Aces is particularly suited to the sequence because the diner and gas-station structures appear to stand completely alone in the desert, emphasising how little protection the group has once the Knights catch up with them. The episode specifically credits Four Aces as the place where the Scooby Gang takes refuge from the Knights of Byzantium.
In House of 1000 Corpses (2003), Four Aces Movie Ranch was transformed into Captain Spauldingโs gas station and Museum of Monsters and Madmen in the fictional town of Ruggsville, Texas. The location is introduced near the beginning of the film, when two would-be robbers enter the establishment only to discover that Captain Spaulding is far more dangerous than they expected. Later, Jerry, Bill, Mary and Denise stop for fuel and food while travelling through the area and meet Spaulding, whose roadside attraction combines fried chicken, murder memorabilia and his bizarre ยซmurder rideยป. Spaulding tells them the local legend of Dr. Satan and marks the supposed location on their map, sending the four travellers farther into the countryside and ultimately towards the Firefly family. The distinctive diner and gas-station complex at Four Aces therefore functions as the gateway into the main story. Filming took place in 2000, several years before the film was finally released, making House of 1000 Corpses one of the earliest major productions known to have used the newly established ranch.
In Identity (2003), Four Aces Movie Ranch provided the real-world basis for the isolated Nevada motel where ten strangers become stranded during a violent rainstorm and begin dying one by one. The motel buildings at Four Aces were used for location work, but the production also constructed an elaborate replica on Stage 27 at Sony Pictures Studios, allowing director James Mangold to stage the filmโs prolonged artificial rain and flooding under controlled conditions. Production designer Mark Friedberg modelled that stage complex on the Four Aces motel, meaning that the ranch influenced the appearance of the film even in sequences not physically shot there. The resulting motel becomes almost the entire world of the film: limousine driver Ed Dakota, police officer Rhodes, actress Caroline Suzanne, motel manager Larry Washington and the other stranded characters repeatedly move between the rooms, office and courtyard as their apparent killer reduces the group one by one. Four Aces is therefore unusual in Identity because it served both as a filming location and as the architectural reference for the large studio set on which much of the motel action was completed.
In The O.C. (2006), Four Aces Movie Ranch appears in the season-four episode ยซThe Earth Girls Are Easyยป during Ryan, Taylor, Seth and Summerโs New Yearโs Eve road trip towards Las Vegas. The episode opens at the desert stop with Summer and Taylor inside the restroom dealing with a pregnancy test while Ryan and Seth wait outside, before the story jumps back several hours to explain how the group arrived there. The pregnancy scare becomes one of the episodeโs central misunderstandings: Taylor suspects Summer may be pregnant, Seth discovers the test and initially draws the wrong conclusion, and the situation becomes still more complicated when Taylorโs purse is stolen. The theft sends the four characters away from the roadside stop and eventually into a bizarre New Yearโs Eve gathering populated by people dressed as aliens. The Four Aces gas station and surrounding desert establish the deliberately strange middle-of-nowhere atmosphere that leads into this part of the episode.
In Moonlight (2007), Four Aces Movie Ranch is used for the out-of-town diner and surrounding desert in the episode ยซFeverยป. Vampire private investigator Mick St. John travels to Victorville to find Leni Hayes, a frightened witness whose testimony could expose an arms dealer. When she steps off the bus, she mistakes Mick for a threat and accidentally shoots him before reluctantly agreeing to trust him. Mick takes her into the roadside diner, where he questions her about the murder she witnessed and learns that she is pregnant. Their conversation is interrupted by the arrival of a man driving a stolen police car and pretending to have been sent as an escort. Mick immediately becomes suspicious of him, and the encounter leads back into the desert as he attempts to keep Leni alive. Four Aces provides both the isolated diner where Mick gains Leniโs trust and part of the exposed desert environment that is particularly dangerous to him as a vampire once he is injured and deprived of blood.
In NCIS (2008), Four Aces Movie Ranch becomes one of the most important locations in the fifth-season finale ยซJudgment Day: Part 1ยป. NCIS Director Jenny Shepard and former agent Mike Franks travel to an abandoned diner in the desert after learning that retired agent William Decker left an ยซinsurance policyยป there containing information connected to a clandestine operation from their past. They search the diner and discover that photographs on the walls conceal clues to where Decker hid the material. Realising that the assassins hunting Jenny are likely to know about the location, Franks wants to leave, but Jenny decides to remain and confront them. Franks eventually steps outside while four armed men enter the diner, after which a gunfight erupts. Tony DiNozzo and Ziva David, who have themselves stopped at the Four Aces gas station while trying to locate Jenny, later enter the diner and discover the bodies of the attackers together with Jenny, who has been killed in the shootout. The diner, gas station, forecourt and surrounding desert are therefore used throughout the episode rather than merely as a brief establishing location.
In Lady Gaga and Beyoncรฉโs music video for ยซTelephoneยป (2010), the Four Aces diner provides the setting for the videoโs climactic roadside massacre. After Beyoncรฉ collects Gaga from prison in the yellow ยซPussy Wagonยป, the pair arrive at the diner, where Beyoncรฉ sits with her abusive boyfriend, played by Tyrese Gibson. Gaga prepares poisoned food and serves it to the customers, while Beyoncรฉโs boyfriend and eventually the other diners collapse and die. Gaga and Beyoncรฉ then perform one of the videoโs main dance sequences inside the restaurant among the bodies before leaving the scene together as police converge on the building. The brightly lit retro diner contrasts deliberately with the increasingly grotesque events taking place inside it, and both the interior and exterior of Four Aces are readily recognisable. The diner scenes formed part of an intensive two-day shoot directed by Jonas ร kerlund.
In My Chemical Romanceโs music video for ยซNa Na Naยป (2010), Four Aces Movie Ranch appears as part of the post-apocalyptic California inhabited by the Fabulous Killjoys. The diner was heavily dressed and weathered to serve as the groupโs desert hideout, fitting the fictional landscape of Battery City and the surrounding Zones established for the bandโs Danger Days concept. The building is seen comparatively briefly, but its boarded-up exterior and isolated desert surroundings became identifiable enough that the same diner has subsequently been recognised by fans as the Killjoysโ hideout. The use of Four Aces also connects ยซNa Na Naยป with several other productions from the same period that exploited the ranchโs ability to look like an abandoned roadside business far removed from modern Los Angeles.
In Red Velvetโs music video for ยซIce Cream Cakeยป (2015), Four Aces Movie Ranch becomes a colourful abandoned desert motel and diner rather than the threatening roadside stop seen in many of its film appearances. Irene, Seulgi, Wendy, Joy and Yeri are shown performing choreography around the motel, diner and desert grounds, while other sequences show them eating ice cream, drinking iced coffee and travelling along the surrounding roads. One of the videoโs recurring surreal images has the group driving through the desert while pursued by an enormous pink ball. The retro buildings, faded signs and empty landscape are deliberately contrasted with the groupโs brightly coloured clothing and the pastel visual style of the video. Both exterior and interior areas of Four Aces were used, making the ranch one of the principal visual settings for ยซIce Cream Cakeยป.
In Twin Peaks: The Return (2017), Four Aces Movie Ranch represents a cheap motel in Buckhorn, South Dakota, in ยซPart 2ยป. Mr. C, the doppelgรคnger of Dale Cooper, arrives in his black car and enters Room 6, where Darya is speaking by telephone with Ray Monroe. He questions her after learning that she and Ray had been paid to kill him, shows her the mysterious Ace of Spades card and eventually murders her in the room. Mr. C then washes his hands in the motel bathroom and continues working from the room before going next door to meet Chantal. The production made unusually extensive use of the real Four Aces motel interior as well as its exterior: the rooms presented on screen as numbers 6 and 7 were actually the ranchโs Rooms 13 and 12. The scenes were filmed there on 22 October 2015, nearly two years before the episode was broadcast.
In Palm Springs (2020), Four Aces Movie Ranch appears briefly but recognisably during Sarah Wilderโs attempt to escape the time loop that repeatedly returns her and Nyles to the same wedding day. Refusing to accept that there is no conventional way out, Sarah gets into a car and simply drives away from Palm Springs, determined to put as much distance as possible between herself and the mysterious cave before the day ends. During the journey she stops at the Four Aces gas station to refuel, gulping energy drinks before continuing through the night and eventually reaching her home in Austin. Her apparent success lasts only until she falls asleep and immediately wakes once again in Palm Springs on the same morning. The weathered pumps and empty desert forecourt therefore appear as a small visual marker in one of Sarahโs increasingly desperate experiments with the limits of the time loop.
In Fall (2022), Four Aces Movie Ranch provides the diner, gas station and motel associated with Becky and Hunterโs journey into the desert before they climb the abandoned B67 television tower. The women stay at the roadside motel, establishing the small complex as one of the few inhabited places anywhere near the tower. Its importance increases after they become trapped 2,000 feet above the ground and begin searching for any possible means of attracting help. From the tower they can see the distant road and motel area, and eventually attach a written distress message to their drone and attempt to fly it towards the motel. The plan almost works, but a passing truck strikes the drone as it crosses the road, destroying both the aircraft and another of their increasingly limited chances of rescue. Four Aces consequently functions not only as part of the opening journey but as the tantalisingly close destination the women cannot physically reach once they are stranded.
In The Last Stop in Yuma County (2023), Four Aces Movie Ranch is not merely a filming location but the physical basis around which Francis Galluppi constructed much of the film. Set in rural Arizona during the 1970s, the story begins when a travelling knife salesman stops at an isolated gas station and is told by attendant Vernon that the pumps have run dry and that the next station is more than one hundred miles away. While waiting for a fuel truck, he crosses to the adjoining diner run by waitress Charlotte. Two bank robbers, Beau and Travis, soon arrive in a damaged green Ford Pinto matching a radio description of the getaway car from a robbery in Buckeye. The salesman realises who they are but becomes trapped in the diner with them as more stranded travellers gradually arrive. What begins as an awkward wait for petrol develops into a hostage situation and finally a violent shootout involving almost everyone inside. The Four Aces diner, gas station, motel, forecourt and surrounding desert are used throughout the film, with interiors and exteriors forming a single continuous fictional rest stop. Galluppi had discovered the ranch while location scouting and became so interested in its diner, motel, gas station and isolated setting that he wrote the screenplay specifically around the existing complex. The production subsequently spent much of its twenty-day shoot there, making The Last Stop in Yuma County one of the most extensive uses of Four Aces on screen.
