King’s Cross Railway Station

King’s Cross Railway Station is one of London’s major railway termini, standing on Euston Road beside St Pancras in the King’s Cross area. The station opened in 1852 for the Great Northern Railway and remains one of the main gateways from London to the north of England and Scotland. Its long platforms, arched train sheds, concourse, footbridges and brick station buildings have made it a major screen railway location. Because the station has been redeveloped over time, some areas seen in older films no longer look the same, and the former Handyside Bridge associated with Harry Potter has been removed from King’s Cross and relocated to Ropley Station on the Watercress Line in Hampshire.

King’s Cross Railway Station has appeared in The Ladykillers (1955), Hoffman (1970), Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), Career Girls (1997), Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001), The Imitation Game (2014), Wonder Woman (2017), Allelujah (2022) and The Boys in the Boat (2024). The station is especially famous for the Harry Potter films, but its film history goes much further back, including Ealing comedy, British drama, Bollywood, wartime period drama and superhero cinema.

In The Ladykillers (1955), King’s Cross Railway Station and the streets around it form an important part of the gang’s robbery plan. The film uses the railway station, the surrounding goods yards and the old King’s Cross area during the build-up to the robbery and the movement of the stolen money. The station environment becomes part of the film’s comic crime geography, linking the Professor’s house, the railway line and the busy transport district around King’s Cross.

In Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), King’s Cross Railway Station appears during the London section of the film. The station is part of the early British setting before the story moves further into Europe and India. Its use places Raj and Simran’s story within the everyday London environment of trains, travel and departure, before the film develops into one of Bollywood’s most famous romances.

In Career Girls (1997), King’s Cross Railway Station is used when Annie arrives in London and is met by Hannah. The station marks the beginning of their reunion in the present-day storyline, before the film moves between their current lives and memories of their student years. The arrival scene uses King’s Cross as a practical London meeting point, connecting travel, friendship and the return of unresolved memories.

In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001), King’s Cross Railway Station appears as the place where Harry Potter first has to find Platform 9¾ and board the Hogwarts Express. The magical platform entrance was filmed between platforms 4 and 5, rather than the real platforms 9 and 10. The film also used the former Handyside Bridge at King’s Cross for the scene where Hagrid gives Harry his ticket before leaving him to find the platform. That bridge was later removed during the redevelopment of King’s Cross and relocated to Ropley Station on the Watercress Line in Hampshire, so the bridge seen in the film is no longer at King’s Cross.

In The Imitation Game (2014), King’s Cross Railway Station appears in the opening evacuation sequence. Children are shown leaving London by train during the Second World War, establishing the wartime setting before the film moves into Alan Turing’s story and the code-breaking work at Bletchley Park. The station is used as a period London departure point, with the platforms and trains representing the mass movement of evacuees out of the capital.

In Wonder Woman (2017), King’s Cross Railway Station appears in the London section of the film. The station was dressed for the First World War period, with steam-era railway stock brought in for the production. It is used as part of Diana Prince and Steve Trevor’s arrival in London, placing the characters in wartime Britain before the story moves toward the front.
