Angels & Demons (2009) is an American mystery thriller directed by Ron Howard, based on Dan Brownโ€™s novel of the same name. The film is the second screen appearance of Tom Hanks as Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon, following The Da Vinci Code. This time Langdon is called to Rome after the death of the Pope and the kidnapping of four cardinals during the papal conclave. Together with scientist Vittoria Vetra, played by Ayelet Zurer, he follows a trail connected to the Illuminati, antimatter and Berniniโ€™s art through a series of churches, monuments and hidden symbols. The film combines religious conspiracy thriller, race-against-time structure and Romeโ€™s historical architecture into a glossy, fast-moving puzzle story.

Angels & Demons is strongly associated with Rome and Vatican City, but the production uses a mixture of real Roman locations, palace interiors, studio sets and recreated spaces. Many of the exterior scenes were filmed around central Rome, including the Pantheon, Piazza del Popolo, Piazza Navona and Castel Santโ€™Angelo, all of which are tied to Robert Langdonโ€™s search through the city. The Biblioteca Angelica was used for Vatican Library material, while the Royal Palace of Caserta doubled for several Vatican interiors, including grand corridors and staircases. Because filming inside many Vatican and church locations was not permitted, several important interiors were rebuilt at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, including versions of the Sistine Chapel, St Peterโ€™s Basilica, the Pantheon, Santa Maria del Popolo, Santa Maria della Vittoria and Castel Santโ€™Angelo. St Peterโ€™s Square was also recreated in California, using Hollywood Park in Inglewood for the large crowd scenes. This gives Angels & Demons a layered location identity: the film is visually rooted in Romeโ€™s churches, fountains, piazzas and ancient streets, but its Vatican world is largely constructed through substitutes and studio recreations designed to match the scale and symbolism of the real places.
