Atlanta Marriott Marquis is a large downtown hotel at 265 Peachtree Center Avenue NE in Atlanta, Georgia. Designed by John Portman, the hotel opened in 1985 and is especially famous for its enormous atrium, curving interior balconies, glass elevators and futuristic vertical space. Its dramatic interior has made it one of Atlantaโ€™s most recognisable filming locations, particularly for productions needing a monumental, slightly unreal or science-fiction-like architectural setting. Marriottโ€™s own site confirms the hotelโ€™s location, while Explore Georgia describes the John Portman-designed building as an Atlanta skyline icon and notes that its atrium was the largest in the world when built.

The hotel has appeared in several major films and television productions, often because its atrium can suggest a world that is corporate, futuristic, dystopian or simply larger than life. It is used in Manhunter (1986), Flight (2012), “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” (2013), “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay โ€“ Part 1” (2014), Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), “Loki” (2021โ€“), “Ms. Marvel” (2022) and “Ghosted” (2023). The hotel is sometimes confused with Hyatt Regency Atlanta, another John Portman atrium hotel nearby, but the Capitol tribute-quarter scenes from “The Hunger Games” and the TVA material from “Loki” belong to Atlanta Marriott Marquis.

In Manhunter (1986), Atlanta Marriott Marquis appears as part of Michael Mannโ€™s cool, modern architectural world. The film uses several Atlanta locations, and the hotelโ€™s atrium adds to the polished, clinical atmosphere that runs through the story of FBI profiler Will Graham and serial killer Francis Dollarhyde. Its curved interior and strong geometric lines fit Mannโ€™s visual style, where architecture often reflects control, isolation and psychological pressure.

In Flight (2012), Atlanta Marriott Marquis is used for scenes connected to Whip Whitakerโ€™s collapse back into addiction. The film was partially shot at the hotel, specifically the scene were Denzel Washingtonโ€™s character gets drunk in the hotel lobby. The Marriott atrium and hotel interior become part of the filmโ€™s tension before Whipโ€™s hearing, placing him in a sleek, anonymous downtown environment where he is supposed to stay in control, but does the opposite.

In “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” (2013), Atlanta Marriott Marquis is used for the victorsโ€™ living quarters in the Capitol. The hotelโ€™s futuristic atrium and glass elevators fit naturally into the artificial luxury of Panem, where the tributes are placed inside a world of wealth, surveillance and performance. One of the most recognisable uses of the location is the elevator scene with Johanna Mason, Katniss, Peeta and Haymitch, where the real hotel interior becomes part of the Capitolโ€™s strange social theatre.

In “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay โ€“ Part 1” (2014), the hotel returns as part of the Capitol setting. The same monumental atrium and vertical elevator system help maintain continuity with the earlier filmโ€™s version of Panemโ€™s elite spaces. Production records also place shooting at the Marriott Marquis in Atlanta on 14 December 2013, during the back-to-back filming of the two “Mockingjay” films.

In Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Atlanta Marriott Marquis appears briefly in connection with the Vulture. The hotelโ€™s atrium was used in the production and appears in trailer material, where the vast vertical interior gives the villain a dramatic architectural playground. The production filmed in several Atlanta locations, including downtown Atlanta and Atlanta Marriott Marquis, with Atlanta often doubling for New York in the film.

In “Loki” (2021โ€“), Atlanta Marriott Marquis becomes one of the main real-world foundations for the Time Variance Authority. The hotelโ€™s atrium and interior halls are used for parts of the TVA, with digital additions turning the already strange building into an even more monumental bureaucratic maze.

In “Ms. Marvel” (2022), one of the hotelโ€™s venue halls is used for a wedding reception scene. The location fits the showโ€™s use of Atlanta-area interiors to stand in for parts of Kamala Khanโ€™s world, while the hotelโ€™s event-space character gives the sequence a believable large-celebration setting. The Atlanta Marriott Marquis media summary also notes that one of its venue halls was featured as a wedding reception in “Ms. Marvel”.

In “Ghosted” (2023), Atlanta Marriott Marquis stands in for the fictional Capital Heights Hotel in Washington, D.C. The film uses the hotelโ€™s spectacular atrium for a large action sequence, with digital effects exaggerating the space even further. The circular restaurant seen atop the building was created with CGI.
