Jack Nicholson (born 22 April 1937) is an American actor and filmmaker whose career and screen persona made him one of the defining stars of modern Hollywood. After years of smaller roles and work in low-budget films, he broke through in the late 1960s and early 1970s, becoming closely associated with the New Hollywood era and a more aggressive, anti-hero style of leading man. Nicholson is known for sharp intelligence, magnetic confidence, and performances that often carry a simmering edgeโ€”whether comedic, threatening, or both at once.

He won the Academy Award for Best Actor for One Flew Over the Cuckooโ€™s Nest (1975) and As Good as It Gets (1997), and won Best Supporting Actor for Terms of Endearment (1983), giving him three Oscars and a record number of acting nominations. His filmography includes landmark roles in films such as Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces, Chinatown, The Shining, Batman (1989) as the Joker, A Few Good Men, The Departed, and About Schmidt. Over decades he became an emblem of American cinema, celebrated for a rare combination of technical skill and unpredictable energy, and he remains one of the most influential actors of his generation.
