The Last Legion is a 2007 historical fantasy adventure film directed by Doug Lefler and based on Valerio Massimo Manfrediโ€™s novel. Set during the collapse of the Western Roman Empire, it follows the young emperor Romulus Augustulus after he is overthrown and imprisoned, before being rescued by the loyal commander Aurelius and the mysterious Ambrosinus. The story mixes late-Roman history with Arthurian legend, gradually connecting Caesarโ€™s sword, the fall of Rome and the mythic origins of Excalibur. With Colin Firth, Ben Kingsley, Aishwarya Rai, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Peter Mullan and Kevin McKidd in the cast, the film plays more like a sword-and-sorcery adventure than a strict historical drama.

The film was shot mainly in Tunisia and Slovakia, with additional production connected to the United Kingdom. Tunisia provided the warmer, Mediterranean-looking settings used for parts of the Roman world and the journey away from Italy, while Slovakia supplied much of the filmโ€™s rugged medieval and frontier atmosphere. Spiลก Castle in eastern Slovakia and ฤŒervenรฝ Kameลˆ Castle near Pezinok were among the key locations, giving the film real stone fortifications, courtyards and hilltop landscapes rather than a purely studio-built ancient world. That mix of North African light and Slovak castles helps the film move from the last days of Rome toward a harsher, more legendary Britain, where the story shifts from imperial history into the beginnings of Arthurian myth.
