Santa Maria Formosa, or Campo Santa Maria Formosa, is one of the largest and most distinctive squares in Venice. Located in the Castello district, it is anchored by the Church of Santa Maria Formosa and its tall bell tower, while the surrounding space opens out far more broadly than many of Venice’s tighter calli and campi. That combination of monumental church architecture, open paving and densely historic residential façades gives it a visual character that works especially well on screen: it can feel calm and elegant in one film, exposed and vulnerable in another, or suddenly chaotic when used for action.
