Rialto Bridge, or Ponte di Rialto, is the oldest of the four bridges spanning the Grand Canal in Venice and one of the cityโs best-known landmarks. The present stone bridge was built between 1588 and 1591 to replace earlier wooden crossings, and its arcaded design has made it one of the most recognisable images of Venice.
Rialto Bridge appears in Summertime (1955), Nosferatu in Venice (1988), Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), and A Haunting in Venice (2023). It is one of the Venetian landmarks most often used to establish the city on screen.
In Summertime (1955), Rialto Bridge appears as part of the filmโs on-location Venice setting surrounding Jane Hudsonโs stay in the city. The bridge is used as one of the recognisable landmarks that place the story firmly in Venice and belongs to the filmโs wider use of real canals, squares, and streets rather than studio recreations.
In Nosferatu in Venice (1988), the Rialto Bridge appears during one of the filmโs atmospheric establishing shots of Venice. Nosferatu is seen travelling by gondola through the cityโs canals, and the bridge is filmed from the water in the dim light of what appears to be early dawn, or possibly night within the logic of the filmโs vampire imagery. The moment is brief, but it places the character directly within one of Veniceโs most recognisable canal settings and adds to the filmโs misty, nocturnal portrait of the city.
In Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), Rialto Bridge is one of the recognisable Venice landmarks seen during the class trip scenes, before the attack by the water creature. The bridge forms part of the opening Venice material that establishes the city as the first major stop on the trip. During the first elemental attack, the Water Elemental, Rialto Bridge gets a good beating as it is where the fight takes place.
In A Haunting in Venice (2023), Rialto Bridge belongs to the wider group of real Venice locations used around the canals and central historic districts. The bridge helps place the story in a recognisable Venice setting, even though the filmโs main dramatic focus is on the palazzo and its immediate surroundings rather than on the bridge itself.
