Willem Dafoe (born 22 July 1955) is an American actor known for intense, physically expressive performances and an unusually wide-ranging career across mainstream films and independent cinema. Born in Wisconsin, he began in experimental theatre and became associated early on with bold, challenging work, breaking through on film in the 1980s with roles that highlighted his distinctive presence and willingness to take risks.
Dafoe has appeared in a long list of acclaimed films, including Platoon, The Last Temptation of Christ, Mississippi Burning, and Shadow of the Vampire, earning multiple Academy Award nominations over the course of his career. He is also widely recognised for major studio and franchise roles, such as Norman Osborn/Green Goblin in Sam Raimiโs Spider-Man films, while continuing to work with auteur directors in projects like The Florida Project, At Eternityโs Gate (where he played Vincent van Gogh), and several collaborations with Wes Anderson. Known for a voice and face that can suggest both warmth and menace, Dafoe has remained one of the most respected character actors of his generation, equally credible as a leading man, a supporting standout, or an unpredictable antagonist.
