Joachim Trier (born 1 March 1974) is a Norwegian filmmaker and screenwriter known for character-driven dramas that blend emotional realism with a sharp, modern sensibility. He made his feature debut with Reprise (2006), which quickly established him as one of Scandinaviaโ€™s most distinctive new voices, and followed it with Oslo, August 31st (2011), a critically acclaimed film set in contemporary Oslo. Trier reached a wider international audience with Thelma (2017), a psychological thriller with supernatural elements, and then with The Worst Person in the World (2021), the final chapter in his informal โ€œOslo trilogy,โ€ which earned major festival attention and strong global reviews.

Across his films, Trier often explores identity, love, ambition, and the quiet pressures of everyday life, using intimate storytelling and precise visual style. He frequently collaborates with screenwriter Eskil Vogt and has worked with actors who have become closely associated with his work, including Renate Reinsve and Anders Danielsen Lie. Today, Trier is widely regarded as one of the leading contemporary European directors, praised for films that feel both deeply personal and widely relatable.
