Brigitte Nielsen

Brigitte Nielsen is a Danish actress, model, singer and television personality born Gitte Nielsen on 15 July 1963 in Rødovre, a suburb west of Copenhagen, Denmark. Her father, Svend Nielsen, worked as an engineer, while her mother, Hanne, was a librarian. She grew up in the Copenhagen metropolitan area and developed an interest in fashion during her teenage years. Standing approximately 185 centimetres tall, she attracted attention for her height and distinctive appearance, although she later recalled being teased about her looks at school. At sixteen, Nielsen left Denmark to pursue modelling professionally, beginning a period of international travel that took her to Paris, Milan, Berlin and New York. She worked with photographers including Helmut Newton and Greg Gorman, and appeared in fashion campaigns and runway shows for designers such as Giorgio Armani, Gianni Versace, Gianfranco Ferré and Thierry Mugler. By her early twenties, she had established herself within the European fashion industry, dividing her time between major fashion capitals rather than maintaining a permanent home in Denmark.

During her early modelling career, Nielsen developed a relationship with Danish musician and composer Kasper Winding. They married in 1983 and welcomed their son, Julian Winding, in April 1984. Their marriage ended the following year, during a period when Nielsen’s professional opportunities were beginning to extend beyond modelling. One of the most important developments came when Italian film producer Dino De Laurentiis began searching for an actress to play the title character in Red Sonja (1985), a fantasy adventure based on a character associated with Robert E. Howard’s fictional universe. The production had experienced difficulty finding a performer with the physical presence required for the role. De Laurentiis reportedly noticed Nielsen in a fashion photograph while she was working in Milan and arranged for her to travel to Rome for a screen test. Despite having no substantial professional acting experience, she was cast opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger, who had recently achieved international success through Conan the Barbarian (1982) and Conan the Destroyer (1984). The opportunity marked a sudden transition from European fashion modelling to leading roles in international cinema.

Red Sonja was directed by Richard Fleischer and filmed entirely in Italy between September and December 1984. Principal photography was based at Stabilimenti Cinematografici Pontini, the former Dinocittà studios outside Rome, where elaborate sets were constructed under the supervision of production designer Danilo Donati. Location filming took place in Abruzzo and northern Lazio, using the rugged landscapes of the Gran Sasso massif and Campo Imperatore plateau to represent the film’s fictional ancient world. The archaeological site of Alba Fucens, near Massa d’Albe, was used for scenes involving Sonja’s transformation into a warrior, while the beech forests around Monte Cimino near Soriano nel Cimino provided the setting for her confrontation with Schwarzenegger’s character, Kalidor. The production also filmed around Celano and other mountain communities in Abruzzo. Working in Italy brought Nielsen into direct contact with experienced international filmmakers and required her to perform demanding action sequences involving sword fighting, riding and elaborate costumes. Released in July 1985, Red Sonja received largely negative reviews and was not the commercial success its producers had anticipated. Nevertheless, the film established Nielsen as a recognisable screen performer and led almost immediately to further Hollywood opportunities.

Nielsen’s next major role came in Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky IV (1985), the fourth instalment in the boxing series he had created nearly a decade earlier. She played Ludmilla Drago, the ambitious and outspoken wife of Soviet boxer Ivan Drago, portrayed by Swedish actor Dolph Lundgren. The character accompanies her husband to the United States, manages his public image and repeatedly defends the Soviet training programme that has produced him. Rocky IV was filmed across several American and Canadian locations during 1985. The opening exhibition match between Drago and Apollo Creed was staged at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas, while the climactic bout, supposedly taking place in Moscow, was filmed at the PNE Agrodome in Vancouver, British Columbia. Additional work took place on soundstages in Culver City and elsewhere in Los Angeles, while the snow-covered landscapes around Jackson Hole and Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming represented rural Soviet territory. Nielsen’s character was particularly associated with the elaborate boxing sequences and press conferences, where her imposing appearance and formal speeches made Ludmilla an important part of the film’s Cold War imagery.

During this period, Nielsen began a relationship with Stallone, whose international fame was approaching its peak following the commercial success of the Rocky and Rambo franchises. Their romance attracted considerable attention from the entertainment press, particularly because both were already well-known public figures. They married on 15 December 1985 at the Beverly Hills residence of producer Irwin Winkler, who had been involved with the Rocky films since the beginning of the series. The private ceremony was followed by a reception attended by actors, musicians and other members of the Hollywood entertainment industry. Nielsen subsequently moved into Stallone’s professional and social circle in Los Angeles, where the couple became frequent subjects of newspaper and magazine coverage. She was also cast opposite him in Cobra (1986), an action thriller directed by George P. Cosmatos. Nielsen played Ingrid Knudsen, a model who witnesses a murder and becomes the target of a violent criminal organisation. Stallone portrayed Lieutenant Marion Cobretti, the police officer assigned to protect her. The film was shot primarily around Los Angeles, with locations including Venice, Long Beach, Redondo Beach, Santa Clarita and the surrounding communities. A sequence in which Ingrid is pursued by the criminals was filmed around Grand Avenue in Downtown Los Angeles, while other action scenes used the Venice canals and industrial locations north of the city. Cobra became another commercial success, but the publicity surrounding Nielsen’s relationship with Stallone increasingly overshadowed discussion of her acting career.

Nielsen received her most prominent Hollywood role outside the Stallone productions in Tony Scott’s Beverly Hills Cop II (1987), starring Eddie Murphy as Detroit police detective Axel Foley. She played Karla Fry, a professional criminal involved in a series of elaborate robberies and the attempted murder of a Beverly Hills police captain. Unlike her comparatively supporting role in Rocky IV, the character was one of the film’s principal antagonists and participated directly in several action sequences. The production was filmed primarily in Southern California between November 1986 and March 1987, with locations in Beverly Hills, Hollywood, Pasadena and Inglewood. One of Nielsen’s most recognisable scenes takes place during the robbery of a jewellery establishment represented by the former Max Factor building at 1666 North Highland Avenue in Hollywood, later converted into the Hollywood Museum. Another important sequence involving her character was filmed on North Bedford Drive in Beverly Hills, while the production used the Athenaeum at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena as the fictional Beverly Hills Gun Club. Beverly Hills Cop II became one of the highest-grossing films of 1987 and gave Nielsen a substantial role in another established American film franchise.

By the time Beverly Hills Cop II was released, however, Nielsen’s marriage to Stallone was ending. The couple divorced in July 1987 after approximately nineteen months together, following a period of intense tabloid coverage and public speculation about their relationship. Nielsen later described the marriage as deeply unhappy and claimed that her decision to leave Stallone had negatively affected her opportunities in Hollywood. She repeated these allegations in interviews over subsequent decades, including a television appearance in Italy in 2026, when she accused her former husband of emotionally and physically abusive behaviour and claimed that she had been excluded from major film opportunities following their separation. These were Nielsen’s accounts of the relationship rather than findings established through a legal proceeding. Following the divorce, she increasingly concentrated on professional opportunities in Europe, particularly in Italy and Germany, where her familiarity with several languages and her existing fashion connections allowed her to continue working across different entertainment industries.

Nielsen developed a second career as a recording artist during the late 1980s. Her debut studio album, Every Body Tells a Story (1987), was recorded in a dance-pop style and released through Teldec, with production contributions from Christian de Walden and Steve Singer. The album included the title song, “It’s a Strange Love” and “Maybe”, and achieved its strongest commercial response in continental Europe. She also recorded “Body Next to Body” with Austrian musician Falco, a single written and produced by Giorgio Moroder. The recording reached number six on the Austrian singles chart and became a hit in Germany, establishing Nielsen as a recognisable pop performer outside cinema. Her move into music coincided with television work in Italy, including an appearance as a presenter on Festival (1987), and she became a frequent guest on European entertainment programmes. She continued recording throughout the following years, releasing a second studio album, I’m the One… Nobody Else, in 1992. Although her musical career never achieved the international commercial success of her early films, it helped sustain her professional activities during a period when substantial Hollywood acting offers had become less frequent.

Her acting career during the late 1980s included the Italian romantic comedy Bye Bye Baby (1988), directed by Enrico Oldoini, and Domino (1988), a psychological drama directed by Ivana Massetti in which Nielsen played the title character. These productions extended her professional connections within Italian cinema and allowed her to work with European directors rather than concentrating exclusively on American action films. She also appeared in the science-fiction television film Murder on the Moon (1989), directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg. During this period, Nielsen had a relationship with American football player Mark Gastineau, a defensive lineman for the New York Jets. Their son, Killian Marcus Nielsen, was born in December 1989. The relationship subsequently ended, and Nielsen married photographer and filmmaker Sebastian Copeland in 1990. Their wedding took place in Malta, an island that would become important again in her personal life more than fifteen years later. The marriage ended in divorce in 1992, while Nielsen continued dividing her professional commitments between Europe and the United States.

One of Nielsen’s most substantial European acting roles came with Fantaghirò, an Italian fantasy television franchise directed by Lamberto Bava and developed from a traditional fairy tale. The series starred Alessandra Martines as a courageous princess and Kim Rossi Stuart as Prince Romualdo, with Nielsen joining the cast in Fantaghirò 2 (1992) as the Black Witch, an evil ruler who attempts to destroy the relationship between the central characters. The role became particularly popular among European television audiences and allowed Nielsen to work within a fantasy production that developed across several instalments. Filming for the second film took place in the former Czechoslovakia, particularly around historic castles and landscaped estates in what are now the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Bojnice Castle, a medieval fortress extensively reconstructed in the nineteenth century, represented the Black Witch’s residence, while Bouzov Castle in Moravia supplied another important royal setting. Additional filming took place in the grounds of Lednice and at studio facilities in Bratislava. Nielsen subsequently returned in further instalments of the series, including productions released in 1993, 1994 and 1996.

The Fantaghirò productions brought Nielsen back to Central Europe during a period of considerable political and economic change following the collapse of communist governments. Working in Czechoslovakia and subsequently in the Czech Republic and Slovakia involved production arrangements substantially different from those she had experienced in Hollywood. She later recalled difficult practical conditions during some of the early filming, particularly in the countryside, where accommodation and facilities were comparatively limited. Nevertheless, the Black Witch became one of her best-known characters among Italian and European television audiences. The franchise also filmed in other countries during its later development, including Thailand and Cuba, although these locations were used for individual productions and cannot all be associated directly with Nielsen’s scenes. Her continuing participation in the series established a professional relationship with Italian fantasy television that lasted considerably longer than her initial period of Hollywood fame.

Alongside Fantaghirò, Nielsen appeared in a succession of independent action films, thrillers and comedies during the 1990s. These included 976-Evil II (1991), the spy comedy The Double 0 Kid (1992), Mission of Justice (1992) and the prison thriller Chained Heat II (1993). She also starred in the science-fiction film Galaxis (1995), playing the warrior Ladera, and appeared in Snowboard Academy (1997), a comedy featuring Corey Haim and Jim Varney. The productions generally operated with smaller budgets than Red Sonja or Beverly Hills Cop II, and several were released primarily through video distribution rather than receiving extensive theatrical runs. In She’s Too Tall (1998), Nielsen played Veronica Lamar, a former fashion model attempting to revive her career, a role that drew directly on her own professional background. She also appeared in the French comedy Paparazzi (1998), maintaining her involvement in European cinema. During these years, Nielsen increasingly accepted a variety of supporting roles and genre productions while continuing to work in fashion, music and television.

Her personal life also developed new connections with Italy and Switzerland during the 1990s. In 1993, Nielsen married Swiss-Italian racing driver Raoul Meyer, with whom she had two sons, Douglas Aaron Meyer, born in 1993, and Raoul Ayrton Meyer Jr., born in 1995. The younger boy’s middle name honoured Brazilian Formula One driver Ayrton Senna, a friend of the family who died during the San Marino Grand Prix in 1994. Nielsen and Meyer divided their lives between European cities and the family’s professional commitments, particularly around Milan and other parts of northern Italy. The marriage lasted until 2005. Nielsen also maintained an interest in recording music, releasing dance-oriented singles under the name Gitta. These included “No More Turning Back” in 2000 and “You’re No Lady”, a collaboration with American performer RuPaul released in 2002. Her professional activities by this stage extended beyond acting and modelling to include television presenting, nightclub appearances and music performances across Europe.

Nielsen’s career took another direction in the early 2000s when she became involved in reality television. She appeared on the Danish version of Big Brother VIP in 2003 and subsequently joined the third season of the American series The Surreal Life (2004). The programme placed celebrities from different entertainment backgrounds together in a shared residence, recording their relationships and daily activities. During filming, Nielsen developed a close friendship and later a romantic relationship with American rapper Flavor Flav, a member of the hip-hop group Public Enemy. Their relationship attracted considerable attention and became the subject of Strange Love (2005), a VH1 reality series following the pair as they travelled and attempted to establish a lasting relationship. Nielsen also participated in the British Celebrity Big Brother in January 2005, where she unexpectedly encountered her former mother-in-law, Jackie Stallone, who joined the programme after filming had begun. Their reunion became one of the season’s most widely discussed moments. Nielsen ultimately finished in third place, introducing her to British viewers who knew relatively little about her earlier modelling and film careers.

During the production of Strange Love, Nielsen had already begun a relationship with Italian bartender and former model Mattia Dessì, whom she had met in a restaurant near Lake Lugano in Switzerland in April 2004. They developed a relationship despite a considerable age difference and her existing professional commitments in different countries. The couple participated in a wedding ceremony in the Dominican Republic in March 2005, but the marriage was not legally valid because Nielsen’s divorce from Raoul Meyer had not yet been finalised. They subsequently married officially on 8 July 2006 at the Radisson SAS Golden Sands Resort near Għajn Tuffieħa in Malta. The ceremony was attended by family members and friends, with American businesswoman Ivana Trump among the witnesses. Nielsen’s return to Malta created a connection with the island where she had previously married Sebastian Copeland in 1990. Following the wedding, she and Dessì established a family life that involved extended periods in Italy and Los Angeles, where Nielsen continued pursuing television and entertainment opportunities.

Nielsen also began speaking more publicly about her problems with alcohol. In 2007, she participated in the first season of Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew, a VH1 documentary-style reality programme following celebrities receiving treatment for substance dependence. The series was filmed at the Pasadena Recovery Center in Pasadena, California, and premiered in January 2008. Nielsen discussed her drinking and its effect on her personal relationships, explaining that she had decided to seek professional help after recognising that her alcohol consumption had become increasingly difficult to control. In interviews following the production, she reported that she had stopped drinking and regarded treatment as an important development in her life. During this period, she also appeared in television programmes documenting cosmetic procedures and participated in other European entertainment projects. Her willingness to discuss previously private experiences became a recurring element of her public appearances, particularly during interviews in Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom.

Nielsen subsequently published an autobiography, Gitte Nielsen – Du har kun ét liv, in Denmark in 2009. The book examined her childhood, modelling career, marriages, professional successes and personal difficulties, with particular attention to her efforts to change her life following treatment for alcohol dependence. An English-language edition appeared under the title You Only Get One Life in 2011. She continued appearing in reality television and became particularly successful in Germany, where she participated in the sixth season of Ich bin ein Star – Holt mich hier raus!, the German version of I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, in January 2012. The programme was filmed in the Australian rainforest and placed contestants in an outdoor camp while requiring them to complete physical and psychological challenges. Nielsen won the competition after receiving the largest share of the final public vote, becoming the season’s Dschungelkönigin, or Jungle Queen. The victory strengthened her popularity among German television audiences and led to further appearances on entertainment programmes in Germany and neighbouring countries.

Her acting work continued during the 2010s, although her roles were generally smaller than those she had played during the 1980s. She appeared in the action film Mercenaries (2014), alongside Zoë Bell, Vivica A. Fox and Cynthia Rothrock, playing Ulrika, a dangerous figure associated with the film’s international criminal conspiracy. The production belonged to the tradition of low-budget ensemble action films that had become a recurring part of her screen career. Nielsen also provided voice work for the Danish animated comedy Ronal the Barbarian (2011), playing the Amazon Queen, and made guest appearances in American television comedies including Raising Hope (2014) and Portlandia (2015). At the same time, she continued working as a television personality in Scandinavia, Germany and Italy. Her ability to move between different national entertainment industries reflected the multilingual career she had developed since leaving Denmark as a teenager.

One of the most notable events in Nielsen’s later life was the birth of her fifth child. After undergoing fertility treatment over many years, she gave birth to a daughter, Frida, in Los Angeles on 22 June 2018, when Nielsen was fifty-four. The child was her first with Mattia Dessì and her first daughter after four sons. Nielsen subsequently explained that she had begun exploring fertility treatment in her early forties and had undergone repeated attempts at in vitro fertilisation before becoming pregnant. The birth attracted considerable international attention because of her age, and Nielsen discussed the subject in interviews with People, ITV and other publications. She acknowledged that the extended process had been physically and emotionally demanding, while also challenging the different social attitudes towards older mothers and older fathers. Having spent much of her earlier motherhood travelling for professional commitments, she described a considerably different approach to raising Frida, with family life becoming a much greater priority than it had been during the early years of her career.

The same year brought Nielsen back to the Rocky franchise after more than three decades. She reprised Ludmilla Drago in Creed II (2018), directed by Steven Caple Jr. and starring Michael B. Jordan, Sylvester Stallone, Dolph Lundgren and Florian Munteanu. The film continues the rivalry between the Balboa and Drago families through a boxing match involving Adonis Creed and Viktor Drago, the son of Nielsen’s former screen husband. Ludmilla returns as a wealthy woman who had abandoned her husband and son following Ivan Drago’s defeat in Rocky IV. Caple invited Nielsen to return after recognising that the character’s absence had become important to the family’s history. The director discussed the casting with Stallone before contacting her, and Nielsen travelled to Philadelphia to participate in filming. Principal photography took place around the Pennsylvania city during the spring of 2018, including its Port Richmond neighbourhood and other locations associated with the Rocky films. The production reunited Nielsen with Lundgren and Stallone, creating a professional connection to the films that had established her international celebrity more than thirty years earlier.

Nielsen continued appearing in smaller film and television projects during the following years. She played Ezilda in the independent thriller The Experience (2019) and portrayed Anubis Queen in the Netflix superhero satire The Guardians of Justice (2022), created by Adi Shankar. The latter combined live-action performances, animation and video-game-inspired imagery in a story involving powerful superheroes and a global political conspiracy. The role maintained her connection to fantasy and action entertainment, although by this stage acting formed only one part of her professional activities. Nielsen also returned more prominently to fashion, an industry in which she had first established herself more than forty years earlier. In December 2023, she walked in Balenciaga’s pre-fall 2024 presentation in Los Angeles, held on Windsor Boulevard with the Hollywood sign visible in the distance. The show marked an important return to high-profile runway modelling and brought her into contact with a younger generation of designers, performers and fashion audiences.

Her return to fashion continued in 2024 when she participated in a campaign for Zalando, appearing alongside performers including Willem Dafoe and Luka Sabbat. Nielsen also gave interviews reflecting on her experiences of working with photographers such as Helmut Newton and fashion designers including Thierry Mugler. She recalled participating in one of Mugler’s runway presentations in 1992 while using crutches following an injury, explaining that the designer had incorporated them into the styling rather than excluding her from the show. Her renewed involvement in fashion coincided with a significant change in her residential circumstances. After approximately thirty-five years associated with Los Angeles, Nielsen and her family moved to Marbella on Spain’s Costa del Sol around 2023. She explained that the decision was motivated largely by her desire to provide a different environment for Frida, closer to relatives and friends living elsewhere in Europe.

Marbella became the family’s principal home, allowing Nielsen to maintain connections with several countries that had been important throughout her life. In a December 2024 interview with Vogue Germany, she explained that three of her adult sons were living in Milan, while Julian was based in Berlin. Her mother was also living in Europe, and Dessì’s Italian family remained within relatively easy travelling distance. The move represented a return to the continent where Nielsen had spent her childhood, established her modelling career and worked extensively in film and television following her departure from Hollywood in the late 1980s. She described a comparatively settled routine in Marbella, concentrating on her daughter’s schooling and family activities while occasionally travelling for modelling, interviews and professional appearances. Her work included promotional events in Germany and Italy, where she continued to attract television audiences familiar with the different stages of her career.

In April 2026, Nielsen appeared on the Italian television interview programme Belve, presented by Francesca Fagnani and broadcast on Rai 2. During the interview, she discussed experiences from her childhood, her struggles with alcohol and her relationships, including her marriage to Sylvester Stallone. She again alleged that the marriage had involved controlling and abusive behaviour and maintained that her departure from the relationship had damaged her Hollywood career. The interview attracted considerable coverage in Italy and Germany, reflecting the continued public interest in a marriage that had ended nearly four decades earlier. Nielsen also spoke about her later family life and the stability she had found with Dessì. By October 2026, she was continuing to live in Marbella while maintaining professional connections with the European fashion and television industries. Her career had involved repeated moves between Denmark, France, Italy, Germany, the United States and Spain, with additional film work in countries including Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Although her international recognition originated with Red Sonja, Rocky IV, Cobra and Beverly Hills Cop II, much of her professional life had subsequently developed through European television, popular music, fantasy productions and modelling.
