Scott Monument is a Gothic monument to Sir Walter Scott in Princes Street Gardens in central Edinburgh. The monument was designed by George Meikle Kemp and completed in the 1840s, rising above Princes Street between the Old Town and the New Town. Its dark stone, spire-like shape, narrow stairways, viewing platforms and position beside Waverley Station make it one of Edinburghโ€™s most recognisable landmarks. On screen, it works both as a clear visual marker for the city and as a usable location in its own right when characters climb the monument, meet near it or move around Princes Street Gardens below it.

Scott Monument appears in Cloud Atlas (2012), where it is one of the key Edinburgh locations in the Robert Frobisher storyline. The monument is also visible in many productions set in Edinburgh, but Cloud Atlas is the strongest direct use because the scene takes place on and around the monument rather than using it only as part of the skyline.

In Cloud Atlas (2012), Scott Monument appears in the 1930s Edinburgh storyline involving Robert Frobisher and Rufus Sixsmith. Frobisher climbs the monument and writes to Sixsmith that he climbs the steps every morning. Later, Sixsmith goes to the monument in the hope of finding him, and Frobisher sees him from the structure but avoids being seen. The scene uses the monumentโ€™s stairways, viewing levels and position above Princes Street Gardens as part of Frobisherโ€™s isolation in Edinburgh, turning the landmark into one of the emotional locations in his story.
