Radio City Music Hall in New York City is one of the great Art Deco landmarks of Midtown Manhattan. Opened in 1932 as part of Rockefeller Center, the venue quickly became known as โ€œThe Showplace of the Nationโ€, with its enormous auditorium, neon marquee, Rockettes performances and long history as both a cinema and live-entertainment venue. Its position on Sixth Avenue, close to Times Square, Rockefeller Plaza and the theatre district, makes it one of the most recognisable New York locations on screen. The exterior alone is often enough to establish Midtown Manhattan, while the interior gives films access to one of the cityโ€™s most famous entertainment spaces.

Radio City Music Hall has appeared in several films, including “The Godfather” (1972), “Annie” (1982), “Rocky III” (1982), “Batteries Not Included” (1987), “Radio Days” (1987) and “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York” (1992). Some films use the interior as a real theatre or movie palace, while others use the exterior and marquee as a shorthand image of Midtown Manhattan. In several of these films, Radio City appears as part of a wider New York sequence, helping place the characters in the bright entertainment district around Rockefeller Center, Sixth Avenue and Times Square.

In “The Godfather” (1972), Radio City Music Hall is where Michael Corleone and Kay Adams are watching “The Bells of St. Maryโ€™s” when news breaks that Vito Corleone has been shot. The location places Michael in a normal New York date-night setting just before the familyโ€™s criminal world pulls him back in. Outside the theatre, newspapers already carry the story of the shooting, turning the bright Midtown entertainment landmark into the setting for one of the filmโ€™s major turning points.

In “Annie” (1982), Radio City Music Hall is used for the โ€œLetโ€™s Go to the Moviesโ€ sequence. Oliver Warbucks takes Annie and Grace Farrell to see “Camille”, and the scene turns the theatre into a grand Depression-era movie palace filled with glamour, music and spectacle. The sequence uses Radio City as more than just a background; the buildingโ€™s scale and show-business identity are central to the fantasy of Annie being introduced to a richer and more magical New York.

In “Rocky III” (1982), Radio City Music Hall appears during the opening montage of Rocky Balboaโ€™s successful title defences. The exterior is shown as one of the major venues where Rocky fights after becoming champion. It is a quick appearance, but it helps establish Rockyโ€™s celebrity status and shows how far he has travelled from small Philadelphia gyms to famous arenas and prestige venues.

In “Radio Days” (1987), Radio City Music Hall appears when young Joe is taken to see “The Philadelphia Story”. Woody Allen uses the venue as part of the filmโ€™s affectionate recreation of 1930s and 1940s New York, when radio, cinema and live entertainment shaped everyday life. The location fits the filmโ€™s nostalgic tone, presenting Radio City as one of the great dream palaces of the cityโ€™s popular culture.

In “Batteries Not Included” (1987), Radio City Music Hall appears during the sequence where the four main characters search Manhattan for the small alien visitors. They are seen walking past Radio City Music Hall as their search takes them through Midtown, before they eventually end up in Times Square. The theatre is used as part of the filmโ€™s real New York geography, placing the characters among the cityโ€™s famous lights, theatres and crowds while they look for the missing aliens.

In “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York” (1992), Kevin McCallister visits Radio City Music Hall during his sightseeing montage after arriving in Manhattan alone. The exterior of the theatre appears as one of the landmarks he takes in while enjoying his unexpected freedom in New York. The scene is brief, but the neon marquee and Midtown setting make Radio City one of the filmโ€™s recognisable Christmas-in-New-York images.
