O’ Horten (2007) is a Norwegian comedy-drama written and directed by Bent Hamer. The film follows Odd Horten, a quiet and deeply habitual locomotive driver who is about to retire after nearly forty years on the Oslo–Bergen railway line. His final days at work do not unfold as neatly as expected, and the routines that have shaped his life begin to fall apart in small, absurd and quietly moving ways. Bård Owe plays Odd Horten, with Espen Skjønberg, Ghita Nørby, Henny Moan, Bjørn Floberg, Kai Remlov, Trond-Viggo Torgersen and Anette Sagen among the supporting cast. Like several of Hamer’s films, O’ Horten is built around loneliness, old age, habit and the strange poetry of everyday life, using dry humour and restrained melancholy rather than dramatic spectacle.
O’ Horten is strongly tied to Oslo and the Bergen Line, rather than to the town of Horten itself. The title refers to the main character, Odd Horten, whose professional life has been spent driving trains between Oslo and Bergen. Oslo S and the railway environment around the capital form an important starting point for the film’s world, while the journey across the Bergen Line gives the story its sense of routine, distance and Norwegian winter landscape. Bergen is also part of the film’s geography, with filming carried out at Bergen Station and Skansen, as well as near the first stop of the Fløibanen funicular, connected to the boarding-house world where Horten stays when he is in the city. In Oslo, Valkyrien restaurant on Majorstuen is one of the film’s most recognisable everyday locations, used as Odd Horten’s regular place and fitting naturally into the film’s brown-café atmosphere. The locations are deliberately ordinary: railway platforms, train interiors, winter streets, modest rooms, cafés, restaurants and quiet urban spaces. This gives O’ Horten a location identity that feels distinctly Norwegian without being scenic in the usual tourist sense; the film finds its atmosphere in stations, routines, snow, old interiors and the small spaces where a man who has lived by timetables must suddenly find a new direction.
Valkyrien Restaurant
Valkyrien Restaurant has appeared in Elling (2001) and O’ Horten (2007). In both films, its old-fashioned interior is used as a familiar Oslo restaurant.
