Judgment in Berlin

Judgment in Berlin (1988) is an American-West German courtroom drama directed by Leo Penn, based on Herbert J. Stern’s book about a real Cold War hijacking case. Martin Sheen plays Judge Herbert J. Stern, an American federal judge brought to West Berlin to preside over the trial of an East German man who forces a Polish airliner to land at Tempelhof Airport in the American sector. The film also stars Sam Wanamaker, Max Gail, Harris Yulin, Heinz Hoenig, Jutta Speidel and Sean Penn. The story turns a dramatic escape attempt into a legal and political dilemma: whether the hijacking should be treated only as a criminal act, or whether the conditions of life behind the Berlin Wall should be considered in judging the man who tried to reach the West. As a Cold War drama, the film is less about action than about borders, law, divided authority and the unusual legal status of West Berlin.

Judgment in Berlin was filmed in Berlin, with the divided city itself forming the centre of the film’s location identity. The production used West Berlin and East Berlin locations, as well as Berliner Union-Film Studio, giving the film a direct connection to the real Cold War geography behind the story. Tempelhof Airport is especially important, both historically and dramatically, since the real hijacked aircraft was forced to land there and the airport represented the American sector of West Berlin. Other Berlin locations connected to the film include Bahnhof Zoo, Kurfürstendamm, the Reichstag area and Tempelhof, placing the story within the public spaces, transport hubs and political landscape of the still-divided city. Studio interiors were used for controlled courtroom and dramatic material, but the film’s strongest location value comes from its use of Berlin before reunification.
