Grand Hotel is a 2016 Norwegian comedy-drama directed by Arild Fröhlich. The film follows Petter Stordalen-inspired hotel heir and self-absorbed alcoholic author Jan Thomas, played by Atle Antonsen, whose life is thrown off balance when he is forced to spend time with a ten-year-old boy with Tourette syndrome. What begins as an awkward and often chaotic situation gradually develops into something more human and emotionally revealing, giving the film a mix of sharp comedy, discomfort and unexpected warmth. Rather than being a broad farce, Grand Hotel is built around clashing personalities, personal collapse and reluctant connection.

The film is closely tied to central Oslo, and its most important location is the real Grand Hotel on Karl Johans gate 31, one of the city’s most famous historic hotels. Using the actual hotel gives the film a polished but slightly claustrophobic setting of suites, corridors and luxury surroundings, which fits well with the main character’s vanity and unraveling private life. Public production listings also identify Akersgata 42 in Oslo as another filming location, placing the film firmly within the city centre rather than in a vague or anonymous urban setting. As a result, the film’s world feels rooted in a recognisable upscale Oslo environment of grand interiors, prestigious addresses and busy central streets.
