Born in what was then Czechoslovakia, he immigrated to Canada with his family and began his career in film and television before breaking through in Hollywood. Reitman first made a major impact as a producer on Animal House (1978), and soon became a key director of big, audience-friendly comedies that combined sharp concept work with strong character chemistry.

He directed and produced Ghostbusters (1984), one of the defining comedy hits of the 1980s, and also directed films such as Stripes (1981), Twins (1988), Kindergarten Cop (1990), Dave (1993), and Junior (1994). In addition to directing, Reitman was a highly influential producer through his company and creative partnerships, helping develop projects and talent across multiple decades, including later work connected to the Ghostbusters franchise. He was also the father of director Jason Reitman, and the two generations became closely associated with a particular blend of accessible comedy and heartfelt storytelling.
