Dean Castle

Dean Castle is a medieval castle in Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire, Scotland, standing within Dean Castle Country Park in a wooded valley north-east of the town centre. Originally known as Kilmarnock Castle, it was the stronghold of the Boyd family, who controlled the estate for more than 400 years. The oldest surviving section is the massive stone Keep, dating from around 1350, while the adjoining Palace was developed during the fifteenth century as a more comfortable residence. The Boyds rose from local landowners to become Lords and later Earls of Kilmarnock, with the family connected to figures including Robert the Bruce, James III and Bonnie Prince Charlie. A fire beginning in the Palace kitchen in 1735 spread through both principal buildings and left much of the castle in ruins. Thomas Evelyn Scott-Ellis, 8th Lord Howard de Walden, inherited the property in 1899 and began an extensive reconstruction, completing the restoration of the Keep around 1908 and rebuilding the Palace during the following decades. In 1975, the castle and part of the surrounding estate were gifted to the local authority, and the property subsequently became the centrepiece of Dean Castle Country Park. The restored buildings now contain important collections of medieval arms and armour, tapestries and historic musical instruments.

Dean Castle has appeared in Outlander (2014–2026). In the second season, its medieval exterior, gateway and courtyard represent Beaufort Castle, the Highland home of Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat, Jamie Fraser’s grandfather. Although the castle establishes the appearance of Beaufort on screen, some of the principal interior rooms were created separately as studio sets.

In Outlander (2014–2026), Dean Castle appears in the second-season episode “The Fox’s Lair” (2016) as Beaufort Castle, seat of Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat, known as the Old Fox. Jamie and Claire travel there after returning to Scotland from France, hoping to persuade Jamie’s grandfather to provide men for the Jacobite army of Prince Charles Edward Stuart. They approach the castle through the surrounding countryside and enter through Dean Castle’s gateway, with the real courtyard and exterior architecture establishing Beaufort throughout their stay. Once there, they unexpectedly discover that Colum MacKenzie is also visiting and is attempting to convince Lord Lovat to remain neutral because he believes the Jacobite rebellion will fail. Laoghaire MacKenzie is present as well, forcing Claire to confront the woman whose testimony had previously helped send her to trial for witchcraft. The courtyard and exterior areas around Dean Castle are used during several of the characters’ arrivals, departures and private encounters as Jamie and Claire attempt to manipulate the competing loyalties within the Fraser family. The episode ends with Lord Lovat signing Colum’s neutrality agreement while simultaneously allowing his son, the younger Simon Fraser, to lead a contingent of Fraser men to join Jamie, enabling Lovat to support both possible outcomes without openly committing himself. The large Great Hall in which much of the political negotiation and dining takes place was not Dean Castle’s real interior: the production converted the existing Lallybroch parlour set into Beaufort Castle’s Great Hall by removing its staircase and fireplace, adding new panelling and decorating the ceiling beams with antlers. Dean Castle therefore provides the physical exterior identity of Beaufort Castle, while the principal hall was completed separately in the studio.
