Deno’s Wonder Wheel

Deno’s Wonder Wheel is a historic Ferris wheel located at Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park on Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York City. Invented by Charles Hermann and built by the Eccentric Ferris Wheel Company, the ride opened in 1920 and rises approximately 150 feet above the amusement district. It has 24 passenger cars, including 16 distinctive swinging cars that move along curved tracks between the rim and the centre of the wheel, and eight stationary cars. Denos D. Vourderis purchased the attraction in 1983, after which it became known as Deno’s Wonder Wheel and the centrepiece of the family-operated amusement park. The Wonder Wheel was designated a New York City landmark in 1989 and has become one of the most recognisable symbols of Coney Island.

Deno’s Wonder Wheel has appeared in The Warriors (1979), Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins (1985), He Got Game (1998), Cloverfield (2008), Men in Black 3 (2012), Mr. Robot (2015–2019), Wonder Wheel (2017), The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (2017–2023), Marry Me (2022) and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024). The amusement park itself lists these productions among the many films and television series shot at the location.

In The Warriors (1979), the Wonder Wheel is used in the opening of the film to establish Coney Island as the home territory of the Warriors. The illuminated wheel is seen before the gang begins its journey from Brooklyn to the meeting of New York’s gangs in the Bronx. It returns as part of the Coney Island setting when the surviving Warriors finally reach their home neighbourhood the following morning, with the surrounding amusement park and boardwalk forming part of the film’s climactic return to Coney Island.

In Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins (1985), the Wonder Wheel is used during Remo Williams’ training under Chiun. As part of overcoming his fear of heights and developing his physical abilities, Remo climbs around the outside of one of the passenger cars while the wheel is operating. He eventually reaches the top of the car and rides it back towards the ground before he and Chiun leave through the amusement park. Fred Ward performed much of the sequence himself on the actual Wonder Wheel.

In He Got Game (1998), the Wonder Wheel appears during a scene between Jesus Shuttlesworth and his girlfriend Lala Bonilla. The two ride the attraction together high above Coney Island, with the wheel providing one of the film’s most recognisable uses of the neighbourhood’s amusement park. Coney Island and landmarks including the Wonder Wheel are repeatedly used throughout the film to establish the community where Jesus lives.

In Cloverfield (2008), the Wonder Wheel appears in footage from Rob Hawkins and Beth McIntyre’s earlier date at Coney Island. Rob and Beth ride the Ferris wheel together while recording themselves with the same camera later used to document the monster attack on New York. The footage resurfaces at the end of the film after the destruction in Central Park, returning briefly to their happier day together at Coney Island. Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park was used for the filming of the sequence.

In Men in Black 3 (2012), Deno’s Wonder Wheel and the surrounding amusement park appear when Agent J travels back to 1969 and heads to Coney Island in an attempt to prevent Boris the Animal from killing Roman the Fabulist. J arrives too late to save Roman and encounters the younger Agent K, who apprehends him before J can explain that he has travelled from the future. The Coney Island sequence was filmed around Deno’s Wonder Wheel Park, with the landmark wheel prominently establishing the period amusement-park setting.

In Mr. Robot (2015–2019), the Wonder Wheel becomes one of the recurring Coney Island locations associated with Elliot Alderson and Mr. Robot. In the first episode, Elliot rides the wheel with Mr. Robot after being introduced to fsociety. During their conversation, Mr. Robot attempts to persuade him to alter evidence from the E Corp cyberattack so that CTO Terry Colby will be blamed instead of fsociety. The wheel and the surrounding Coney Island amusement district return at several points throughout the series as an important setting connected to Elliot, Mr. Robot and fsociety.

In Wonder Wheel (2017), the attraction provides both the film’s title and one of the defining landmarks of its 1950s Coney Island setting. The story centres on Ginny, her carousel-operator husband Humpty, his estranged daughter Carolina and lifeguard Mickey, with their lives unfolding among the amusement rides, beach and boardwalk. The real Deno’s Wonder Wheel and surrounding amusement park were used for location filming, while a number of interiors and other portions of the period Coney Island environment were recreated on sets. The wheel is repeatedly visible above the characters’ world and serves as the film’s dominant visual symbol.

In The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (2017–2023), the Wonder Wheel is central to the season 4 premiere, “Rumble on the Wonder Wheel”. Midge Maisel joins her family at Coney Island and is forced to reveal that she has been removed from Shy Baldwin’s tour. With members of the Maisel and Weissman families spread between different passenger cars, they shout questions, accusations and arguments to one another as the wheel turns. The production filmed the family approaching the real Wonder Wheel and used the actual attraction for wide material, while much of the dialogue inside the individual cars was recreated on a soundstage because of the technical difficulty of filming the entire conversation on the operating wheel.

In Marry Me (2022), Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park appears when Kat Valdez surprises Charlie Gilbert with a visit to Coney Island. The sequence forms part of their developing relationship away from Kat’s highly controlled celebrity life, with the Wonder Wheel and surrounding amusement rides providing the setting for their time together at the fair. Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson filmed the Coney Island material at the real amusement park.

In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024), the Wonder Wheel appears during the supernatural freezing of New York City caused by Garraka. On what begins as a hot summer day at Coney Island, the enormous dark supernatural cloud approaches from across the ocean as people enjoy the beach and amusement park. The temperature suddenly plunges and ice spreads across the area, reaching the Wonder Wheel and trapping riders as the attraction begins to freeze. The real Coney Island landmark provides the basis for the sequence, with visual effects transforming the summer amusement park into part of Garraka’s frozen New York.
