Victoria Terrace

Victoria Terrace is an elevated pedestrian terrace in Edinburgh’s Old Town, running above Victoria Street and linking the upper levels around the Royal Mile with the curve of shops and restaurants below. The terrace gives views down over one of Edinburgh’s most recognisable streets, with its colourful shopfronts, steep levels, stone buildings and close connection to the Grassmarket and Lawnmarket. Because it sits above street level, Victoria Terrace has a different screen identity from Victoria Street itself: it works as a raised walkway, chase route and overlooking space rather than simply as part of the street below.

Victoria Terrace has appeared in Cloud Atlas (2012) and is also connected to Edinburgh’s wider screen geography through productions filmed around Victoria Street and the Old Town, including F9: The Fast Saga (2021). Cloud Atlas is the strongest direct use of Victoria Terrace, while F9 used the neighbouring Victoria Street area as part of its Edinburgh action material.

In Cloud Atlas (2012), Victoria Terrace appears in the 1930s Edinburgh storyline involving Robert Frobisher and Rufus Sixsmith. The location is used for a chase down Victoria Terrace, placing the characters within the layered streets and raised walkways of the Old Town. Along with Scott Monument, City Chambers and India Buildings, the terrace forms part of the film’s Edinburgh material around Frobisher’s story. Its height above Victoria Street gives the scene a distinctive sense of movement through the city’s vertical geography, where steps, terraces and narrow streets connect different levels of the Old Town.

In F9: The Fast Saga (2021), the production filmed in the Victoria Street area as part of its Edinburgh action sequence. The main street material belongs more naturally under Victoria Street, but Victoria Terrace is part of the same Old Town geography above it. The sequence uses Edinburgh’s steep streets, curves and layered architecture as part of the film’s vehicle action, with the city standing in as one of the international locations in the Fast & Furious storyline.
