Crown Pawn Shop is a pawn shop at 20933 Roscoe Boulevard in Canoga Park, Los Angeles. The storefront sits in a strip-mall setting in the San Fernando Valley, far from the more glamorous Los Angeles locations often associated with crime films. Its plain exterior, parking lot and back-room layout made it a memorable location in Pulp Fiction, where an ordinary pawn shop becomes the site of one of the film’s darkest and most violent sequences.
Crown Pawn Shop appears in Pulp Fiction (1994). The location is used as Maynard’s pawn shop, where Butch Coolidge and Marsellus Wallace are captured after their street fight spills into the store. The shop is one of the most recognisable Quentin Tarantino locations in Los Angeles, and the real Crown Pawn Shop still stands on Roscoe Boulevard in Canoga Park.
In Pulp Fiction (1994), Crown Pawn Shop appears after Butch Coolidge hits Marsellus Wallace with his car and the two men fight in the street. Their fight carries them into the pawn shop, where Maynard pulls a shotgun on them and takes them prisoner. Butch later escapes from the back room, but instead of leaving, he chooses a weapon from the shop and returns to rescue Marsellus from Maynard and Zed. The scene turns Crown Pawn Shop from a normal roadside business into the location for one of the film’s most infamous shifts in tone, where Butch and Marsellus briefly move from enemies to survivors of the same nightmare.
