Vemork

Vemork in Rjukan, Norway, is one of the most important industrial and wartime sites in Norwegian history. The former hydroelectric power station and heavy water plant stands dramatically on the mountainside above the Måna valley, surrounded by steep slopes, waterfalls and the harsh Telemark landscape. During the Second World War, Vemork became central to the Nazi heavy water programme, and the sabotage operation against the plant remains one of the most famous resistance actions in Norway. Today the site is part of the Norwegian Industrial Workers Museum, combining industrial history, war history and a very strong sense of place.

Vemork has appeared in productions about the heavy water sabotage, including Kampen om tungtvannet (1948), The Heroes of Telemark (1965) and The Heavy Water War (2015). The location is unusual because the films and series are not just using it as a dramatic backdrop; they are returning to the actual place where the historical events took place. The factory buildings, the mountain approach, the gorge and the wider Rjukan landscape give these productions an authenticity that would be difficult to recreate elsewhere.

In Kampen om tungtvannet (1948), Vemork is connected directly to the real sabotage story only a few years after the war. The film is partly documentary-like in its approach and includes several of the real Norwegian saboteurs playing themselves. This gives the Vemork material a special historical weight, since the film was made while the events were still recent and many of those involved were still alive.

In The Heroes of Telemark (1965), Vemork is used as the heavy water plant targeted by the Norwegian resistance. The film turns the sabotage operation into a larger international war adventure, with Kirk Douglas and Richard Harris leading a fictionalised version of the story. The real Vemork setting and the surrounding winter landscape give the film much of its scale, with the plant appearing as a remote and heavily defended industrial target in the mountains above Rjukan.

In The Heavy Water War (2015), Vemork again becomes central to the story of the sabotage operation. The series follows the Norwegian resistance fighters, the German nuclear programme and the Allied efforts to stop the production of heavy water. By returning to Rjukan and the Vemork area, the series places the drama back in the real landscape of the operation, using the factory, mountains and winter conditions to underline how difficult and dangerous the mission was.
