Lea Thompson (born 31 May 1961) is an American actress, director, and producer best known for playing Lorraine Baines-McFly in the Back to the Future trilogy (1985โ€“1990), a role that made her a familiar face of 1980s pop culture. She began her career as a dancer and moved into acting in the early 1980s, gaining early film visibility with titles such as Jaws 3-D (1983) before breaking through fully with Back to the Future.

Alongside the trilogy, Thompson became strongly associated with 1980s teen and romance films, including Some Kind of Wonderful (1987). She also built a substantial television career, most notably as Caroline in the long-running sitcom Caroline in the City (1995โ€“1999). In the 2000s and 2010s she remained active on screen while also expanding behind the camera, directing episodes of various television series and establishing herself as a steady, multi-hyphenate presence in the industry.
