GLOW is a Netflix comedy-drama series created by Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch, released between 2017 and 2019. Set in 1980s Los Angeles, it follows Ruth Wilder, a struggling actress who becomes part of a low-budget womenโ€™s wrestling television show called Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling. Alongside Debbie Eagan, Carmen Wade and the rest of the ensemble, Ruth is pulled into a world of invented personas, physical performance, exploitation, ambition and unlikely friendship. The series works both as a backstage comedy and a character drama, using the absurdity of televised wrestling to explore acting, gender, fame, friendship and survival in the entertainment industry.

The series was filmed in Los Angeles, especially around the San Fernando Valley, which gives it a strong Southern California identity rather than a generic studio sitcom feel. Chavoโ€™s Boxing Gym, where the women train, was created through a combination of studio interiors and the exterior of the San Fernando Masonic Lodge, while the fictional Hayworth Hotel wrestling venue used the Hollywood Palladium for its ballroom scenes. Other Los Angeles-area locations include The Pink Motel & Cadillac Jackโ€™s Diner in Sun Valley, which fits the showโ€™s retro roadside look, along with additional streets, car parks and practical locations that help recreate the slightly worn, neon-edged atmosphere of 1980s L.A. The result is a series that feels rooted in the entertainment margins of Los Angeles, moving between gyms, motels, clubs, rehearsal spaces and makeshift stages where the characters try to turn low-budget chaos into something like a career.
