Linda Cardellini

Linda Edna Cardellini (born 25 June 1975) is an American actress and producer known for her roles in Freaks and Geeks (1999–2000), ER (1994–2009), Bloodline (2015–2017), Dead to Me (2019–2022) and the films Scooby-Doo (2002), Brokeback Mountain (2005) and Green Book (2018). She was born in Redwood City, California, and grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area as the youngest of four children. Her father, Wayne David Cardellini, was a businessman, while her mother, Lorraine Hernan, raised the family. Cardellini has Italian ancestry on her father’s side and Irish, German and other European ancestry through her mother. Raised in a Roman Catholic household, she became interested in performing while attending elementary school. At around the age of ten, she appeared in a school production, and an opportunity to perform in The Music Man encouraged her to pursue acting more seriously. Although her parents had no professional connection to theatre, they supported her interest, and she began taking drama lessons and participating in local productions.

Cardellini attended Saint Francis High School in Mountain View, California, where theatre became an important part of her education. During her first year, she appeared in a school production of Rebel Without a Cause, initially receiving a small part without dialogue. She subsequently performed in and helped direct productions including Grease, The Wiz and Dracula, becoming one of the school’s most active drama students. She also attended summer acting classes at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco and worked at the Fortier-Bonneau Casting agency, gaining an early understanding of how professional auditions were organised. After graduating in 1993, she considered moving to New York to pursue theatre but ultimately chose Los Angeles, where she enrolled at Loyola Marymount University. She studied theatre arts while beginning to audition for television and film, graduating in 1997 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Her training also included a summer programme at the National Theatre in London. She later described Loyola Marymount as an important source of professional connections and friendships during her early years in Los Angeles, and the university recognised her achievements with a Distinguished Alumni Award in 2007.

Cardellini’s first substantial television role came in the children’s horror-comedy series Bone Chillers (1996), in which she played Sarah, one of a group of students encountering supernatural events at their school. The programme was short-lived, but it gave her experience working regularly on a television production. Other early appearances followed in 3rd Rock from the Sun, Step by Step and Boy Meets World, where she played Lauren, a young woman who briefly becomes involved with the central character, Cory Matthews. Although her appearance was limited to a few episodes, the storyline remained memorable to the series’ audience. Her early film work included the family comedy Good Burger (1997), the romantic comedy Dead Man on Campus (1998) and supporting roles in smaller productions. During these years, she continued attending auditions throughout Los Angeles while attempting to establish herself beyond guest appearances. Her first major breakthrough came when Paul Feig cast her as Lindsay Weir in Freaks and Geeks, the comedy-drama created by Feig and executive-produced by Judd Apatow.

Set in a fictional suburb of Detroit, Michigan, during the 1980–81 school year, Freaks and Geeks followed two groups of teenage outsiders attempting to navigate high school. Cardellini played Lindsay, a gifted mathematics student who begins distancing herself from her academically successful friends and spending time with a group of rebellious classmates. Although the story takes place in Michigan, production was based in Southern California. Ulysses S. Grant High School in Van Nuys was among the buildings used to represent William McKinley High School, while additional filming took place around Santa Clarita, Newhall and the San Fernando Valley. Cardellini worked alongside a young ensemble that included James Franco, Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, Busy Philipps, Martin Starr and John Francis Daley. Philipps had already known Cardellini from their time at Loyola Marymount University, and the two developed a friendship that continued beyond the series. Freaks and Geeks premiered on NBC in September 1999 but struggled to attract a sufficiently large audience and was cancelled after one season. Its eighteen episodes subsequently developed a devoted following, and the programme became an important early credit for several actors and filmmakers who later achieved considerable success.

The experience also affected Cardellini’s personal life. She began a relationship with Jason Segel, who played Lindsay’s boyfriend Nick Andopolis in Freaks and Geeks, and the couple remained together for several years before separating in 2007. Professionally, the series provided her with greater opportunities in cinema. She played Chutney Windham, a witness whose testimony becomes central to the courtroom climax, in Legally Blonde (2001), starring Reese Witherspoon. Her most prominent film role of the period came when she was cast as Velma Dinkley in Scooby-Doo (2002), the live-action adaptation of the Hanna-Barbera animated series. Having watched the cartoons during her childhood in Redwood City, Cardellini was particularly familiar with Velma and attended her audition wearing an orange turtleneck, a skirt and borrowed glasses resembling the character’s costume. The film was produced in Queensland, Australia, with principal photography at Village Roadshow Studios on the Gold Coast and location filming at Tangalooma on Moreton Island and Mount Tamborine. The fictional Spooky Island resort was represented by several locations rather than a single property. Cardellini appeared alongside Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar and Matthew Lillard, and the film’s commercial success led to Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (2004), which reunited the principal cast and returned to Queensland for production.

By the time the second Scooby-Doo film was released, Cardellini had joined the cast of one of American television’s most established dramas. In October 2003, she began appearing as Samantha Taggart, a nurse and single mother working in the emergency department of Chicago’s fictional County General Hospital, in ER. The role provided her with a regular television commitment that continued through the series’ final season in 2009. Although ER was set in Chicago and occasionally used the city’s streets and buildings for exterior scenes, most of its hospital interiors were filmed at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California. Cardellini worked with actors including Maura Tierney, Goran Višnjić, Mekhi Phifer and Parminder Nagra, portraying a character whose demanding hospital work was complicated by her responsibilities towards her young son. The programme allowed her to develop a character over several years, in contrast to the comparatively brief appearances that had characterised much of her earlier career. It also established professional relationships that remained important long after the series ended, particularly her friendship with Tierney.

Her work on ER coincided with several independent film projects, including American Gun (2005) and Ang Lee’s Brokeback Mountain (2005). In the latter, Cardellini played Cassie Cartwright, a waitress who becomes romantically involved with Ennis Del Mar, portrayed by Heath Ledger. Although the story takes place principally in Wyoming and Texas, the film was produced largely in Alberta, Canada, using locations around Calgary, Fort Macleod and the Canadian Rockies. Cardellini’s comparatively small role formed part of a production that subsequently won three Academy Awards and received considerable international attention. She also appeared in Grandma’s Boy (2006), a comedy about the video game industry, and later worked with comedians Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg in Daddy’s Home (2015) and its sequel Daddy’s Home 2 (2017). In those films, she played Sara Whitaker, a mother whose former husband and current partner compete for the affection of her children. The first production was filmed principally in the New Orleans area of Louisiana, where local neighbourhoods represented the fictional family’s suburban environment. These lighter roles developed alongside her work in drama, allowing Cardellini to move between different types of film without being identified exclusively with one genre.

Cardellini also developed a substantial career in voice acting. She provided the voice of Wendy Corduroy, the teenage employee of the Mystery Shack, in Disney’s animated television series Gravity Falls (2012–2016), created by Alex Hirsch. Other animated productions included Regular Show, Sanjay and Craig and later appearances as Velma Dinkley in animated Scooby-Doo projects. Following the conclusion of ER, she accepted the leading role in the independent drama Return (2011), directed by Liza Johnson. Cardellini played Kelli, an American soldier who returns from military service and struggles to resume her previous family life in a small Ohio community. The production was filmed in Ohio, including locations around Akron and Cleveland, and premiered in the Directors’ Fortnight section of the Cannes Film Festival in May 2011. Her performance earned a nomination for Best Female Lead at the Independent Spirit Awards. The part gave her an opportunity to explore a character whose experiences were far removed from the comedy roles and established television work for which she was then best known.

Her personal life also changed during this period. Cardellini reconnected with Steven Rodriguez, a childhood friend whom she had first met at elementary school in California. She later recalled admiring his bicycle tricks when she was approximately ten years old. Rodriguez subsequently pursued work as a make-up artist, and the two remained acquainted for many years before beginning a romantic relationship around 2010. Their daughter, Lilah-Rose, was born on 29 February 2012. In June 2013, Rodriguez proposed to Cardellini while they were in New York City with family members and close friends, including Maura Tierney. The couple became engaged but did not immediately marry, maintaining a relatively private family life in the Los Angeles area. Rodriguez has also worked professionally with Cardellini, including providing make-up for editorial photography and public appearances. She has spoken about how motherhood changed her priorities and influenced the amount of time she was prepared to spend away from home for professional commitments.

After taking time away from acting around the birth of her daughter, Cardellini returned to television with a recurring role in the sixth season of Mad Men (2007–2015). She portrayed Sylvia Rosen, a married woman living in the same Manhattan apartment building as advertising executive Don Draper, played by Jon Hamm. The period drama was set in New York during the 1960s but filmed principally in the Los Angeles area, where studio interiors and selected exteriors represented the city’s residential and commercial buildings. Cardellini’s character became involved in an affair with Draper, introducing a difficult personal conflict into his increasingly troubled life. She received her first Primetime Emmy Award nomination in 2013 for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series. The performance also represented a change from the more sympathetic characters she had often played previously. She followed it with further dramatic film work, including the independent romance Welcome to Me (2014), starring Kristen Wiig, and the Marvel production Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), in which she portrayed Laura Barton, the wife of Jeremy Renner’s character Clint Barton, also known as Hawkeye. She later reprised the role in Avengers: Endgame (2019) and the Disney+ series Hawkeye (2021).

Another important television project took Cardellini to the Florida Keys for Bloodline (2015–2017), a Netflix family thriller created by Todd A. Kessler, Daniel Zelman and Glenn Kessler. She played Meg Rayburn, the youngest member of a wealthy Florida family whose carefully maintained public reputation is threatened by the return of an estranged son. The ensemble included Kyle Chandler, Ben Mendelsohn, Sissy Spacek and Norbert Leo Butz. Unlike many television series that use one region to represent another, Bloodline was filmed extensively in the Florida Keys, particularly around Islamorada and Key Largo. The Rayburn family’s waterfront home and guesthouse were represented by the Moorings Village resort in Islamorada, while other scenes used local businesses including the Caribbean Club in Key Largo and the Green Turtle Inn in Islamorada. Cardellini spent extended periods in South Florida during production, including approximately eight months for the first season. She later described the difficulties of filming outdoors in the area’s heat and humidity, particularly the large numbers of mosquitoes around protected mangrove forests. She eventually purchased protective netting clothing after observing a cameraman wearing a full insect suit during location work. Bloodline ran for three seasons and gave Cardellini another substantial dramatic role following her work on ER and Mad Men.

Her subsequent feature films included The Founder (2016), in which she portrayed Joan Smith, who later became the wife of McDonald’s businessman Ray Kroc, played by Michael Keaton. The production was filmed mainly in Georgia, with locations around Atlanta standing in for Illinois and California during different periods of Kroc’s life. Cardellini also played Dolores Vallelonga in Peter Farrelly’s Green Book (2018), opposite Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali. Based on the experiences of pianist Don Shirley and his driver Tony Vallelonga during a concert tour through the American South in 1962, the film was produced principally in Louisiana, with New Orleans and surrounding communities representing multiple American cities. Cardellini’s character, Tony’s wife, remains at the family’s home in New York while he travels with Shirley. During preparation and filming, she met members of the real Vallelonga family, several of whom appeared in the production. She was also permitted to wear jewellery that had belonged to Dolores, including her bracelet and ring. Green Book won the Academy Award for Best Picture in February 2019, bringing Cardellini into another internationally successful production.

In 2019, Cardellini returned to horror with The Curse of La Llorona, directed by Michael Chaves. She played Anna Garcia, a widowed social worker and mother of two children who becomes involved in a supernatural mystery inspired by the Latin American legend of La Llorona. The film is set in Los Angeles during 1973 and was shot entirely in and around the city. A residence in the West Adams district represented Anna’s family home, with additional interiors and exteriors constructed at a nearby production facility. The film allowed Cardellini to take a leading role in a horror production more than twenty years after her earliest work in the genre. Other projects during the period included the crime drama Capone (2020), starring Tom Hardy, and further voice performances in animated productions. She also voiced Lylla, a genetically modified otter connected to Rocket’s past, in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023).

Cardellini’s most substantial leading role of the late 2010s came when she was cast opposite Christina Applegate in the Netflix comedy-drama Dead to Me (2019–2022), created by Liz Feldman. She played Judy Hale, an apparently cheerful and compassionate woman who becomes close to a recently widowed estate agent, Jen Harding, played by Applegate. Their friendship develops around a series of concealed events involving an accidental death, family relationships and personal grief. Set in the wealthy coastal community of Laguna Beach, California, the series was filmed mainly in Los Angeles and its surrounding areas. The house representing Jen’s residence was a property in Sherman Oaks, while Laguna Beach City Hall and other coastal locations provided establishing scenes. Cardellini also worked on location in San Pedro during the first season, where an overnight stay at a hotel with Feldman and members of the writing team helped establish their working relationship. Both Cardellini and Applegate served as producers, giving them greater involvement in the development of their characters and the series as a whole.

Dead to Me became an important personal as well as professional experience for Cardellini. She and Applegate developed a close friendship during filming, and their relationship remained central to the production through its three seasons. The third season was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequently affected by Applegate’s diagnosis with multiple sclerosis in 2021. Cardellini supported her colleague during the difficult final production period, while their fictional characters also faced serious illness in the concluding episodes. Cardellini received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 2020, together with a nomination as co-executive producer when the programme was nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series. The final season premiered in November 2022, bringing the story to a conclusion after filming had continued intermittently for several years. Cardellini later described the project as particularly meaningful because of the close relationships formed among the cast and creative team.

Following Dead to Me, Cardellini reunited with Feldman for No Good Deed (2024), a Netflix dark comedy starring Lisa Kudrow, Ray Romano and an ensemble of Los Angeles characters competing to purchase an expensive house. Cardellini played Margo Star, a woman whose apparent wealth and domestic circumstances conceal a more complicated personal history. The production was filmed in Los Angeles, with a Spanish-style residence in Hancock Park representing the principal property in the fictional Los Feliz neighbourhood. Its interiors were constructed on a sound stage, while other residences used in the series included actual privately owned houses. Cardellini’s character lived in a contrasting modern property, selected partly for its impersonal appearance. The role allowed her to work again with Feldman while portraying a character considerably less sympathetic than Judy Hale. The series premiered in December 2024 and continued Cardellini’s association with television dramas combining crime, family secrets and dark humour.

In 2026, Cardellini starred alongside Jason Bateman and David Harbour in the HBO limited series DTF St. Louis, created by Steven Conrad. She portrayed Carol Love-Smernitch, a woman whose relationships with two middle-aged men become central to a story involving infidelity, friendship and a suspicious death. Although the series is set in suburban St. Louis, Missouri, principal photography took place in and around Atlanta, Georgia. Locations included Georgia Public Broadcasting’s studios in Midtown, used to represent a fictional St. Louis television station, and Piedmont Park, where Cardellini’s character is seen jogging. Other scenes were filmed around Underground Atlanta and residential neighbourhoods outside the city. The production also reunited Cardellini with several actors and collaborators she had known for years, while allowing her to explore a character involved in a more morally ambiguous story. DTF St. Louis premiered in March 2026 and received thirteen Primetime Emmy Award nominations. At the Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony on 6 September 2026, Cardellini won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, receiving her first Emmy Award.

Her next leading role brought her to one of American horror cinema’s best-known franchises. Cardellini starred as Pamela Voorhees in Crystal Lake (2026), a television prequel to Friday the 13th (1980), developed by Brad Caleb Kane and produced by A24 for Peacock. Rather than concentrating on Pamela solely as the murderer revealed at the end of the original film, the series explores her earlier life as a single mother struggling with the death of her son Jason. Production began in New Jersey during 2025, returning to several areas associated with the original film. Filming took place in Blairstown, whose streets had appeared in Friday the 13th, and around West Milford and Ringwood, where woodland and lakeside locations provided the fictional community and camp surroundings. Cardellini performed demanding scenes during night shoots in the New Jersey countryside, later recalling encounters with insects, snakes and the physical difficulties of working in the woods. The eight-part series premiered on 15 October 2026, introducing her portrayal of a character originally played by Betsy Palmer.

Cardellini also completed work on Way of the Warrior Kid, directed by McG and starring Chris Pratt and Jude Hill. Adapted from Jocko Willink’s novel, the film features Cardellini as Sarah, the mother of a schoolboy whose uncle helps him develop confidence through physical training and discipline. It was filmed in Southern California during 2024, including locations in San Diego and Los Angeles, and was scheduled for release on Apple TV in November 2026. The production continued her association with family-oriented drama alongside the more challenging characters she had recently portrayed in DTF St. Louis and Crystal Lake.

Throughout her career, Cardellini has maintained close personal and professional connections with California. Her early theatrical training began in the San Francisco Bay Area, while Loyola Marymount University provided the foundation for her working life in Los Angeles, where she continues to live with her family. Her projects have nevertheless taken her to Queensland, London, Louisiana, the Florida Keys, Georgia and New Jersey, among other locations. Having first gained recognition as a high-school student in Freaks and Geeks, she developed a career that has included long-running television dramas, independent films, Hollywood comedies, animation and major studio productions, with increasingly substantial leading roles and involvement in television production.
