Robert Shaw (9 August 1927 – 28 August 1978) was an English actor, novelist, and playwright best remembered for a small number of towering film performances that have only grown in reputation. Born in Westhoughton, Lancashire, he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and built his craft in theatre before becoming a formidable screen presence, often cast as hard-edged authority figures, villains, or men under pressure. Shaw brought intensity and intelligence to every role, with a style that could feel both brutally direct and unexpectedly sensitive.
He became internationally famous for playing shark hunter Quint in Jaws (1975), delivering one of cinema’s most iconic monologues and a performance that balances bravado, trauma, and dark humour. Shaw also left a major mark as the assassin Donald “Red” Grant in From Russia with Love (1963), as well as key roles in films such as The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974) and The Sting (1973). Beyond acting, he wrote novels and plays, showing the same sharp observational eye found in his performances. Shaw died suddenly at the age of 51, but his work remains a benchmark for powerful, character-driven acting.
