Oasis Motel in Gretna, Louisiana, appears in “Dallas Buyers Club”, the 2013 biographical drama starring Matthew McConaughey as Ron Woodroof. In the film, the motel becomes one of the key places connected to Ron’s underground operation, as he begins running his buyers club from a cheap roadside motel room. The setting fits the film’s rough, stripped-down style, giving the story a worn and unsentimental backdrop far removed from the polished image of Dallas. Although the film is set mainly in Texas, much of “Dallas Buyers Club” was shot in Louisiana, with the Greater New Orleans area standing in for Dallas.
The real Oasis Motel is located at 70 Westbank Expressway in Gretna, just across the Mississippi River from New Orleans. Its distinctive low-budget motel look made it a convincing location for the film’s depiction of Ron Woodroof’s increasingly desperate fight to access and distribute unapproved HIV medication in the 1980s. Since the release of “Dallas Buyers Club”, the motel has also attracted attention locally for less glamorous reasons, including reports about crime and repeated emergency calls, but for film-location purposes it remains notable as one of the more recognisable real Louisiana locations used in the movie.
