Richard Donner (24 April 1930 – 5 July 2021) was an American film director and producer whose work helped define modern blockbuster entertainment. After starting in television—directing episodes of series such as The Twilight Zone—he moved into features and broke through with The Omen (1976), a major hit that established him as a director with strong control of suspense and tone.

Donner became a key architect of late-20th-century popular cinema with Superman (1978), which set a new standard for superhero films, and later with action classics such as The Goonies (1985) as producer and the Lethal Weapon series (beginning in 1987), known for its blend of intense set-pieces, humour, and character chemistry. His other notable films include Scrooged (1988), Maverick (1994), and Conspiracy Theory (1997). Widely respected by actors and crews for his leadership and collaborative style, Donner left a lasting legacy through films that combined craftsmanship, warmth, and crowd-pleasing storytelling.
