Michael Richards (born 24 July 1949) is an American actor and comedian best known for playing Cosmo Kramer on the sitcom Seinfeld (1989–1998). Raised in California, he began performing stand-up and improvisational comedy in the 1970s and developed a physical, high-energy style that translated perfectly to television. Before Seinfeld, he appeared in various TV roles, including a notable stint on the sketch series Fridays, where he showcased his talent for character comedy.

As Kramer, Richards became one of the show’s defining comic forces, famous for slapstick timing, sudden entrances, and an unpredictable, elastic performance style. He won multiple Emmy Awards for the role and remains closely associated with the character’s place in TV history. After Seinfeld, Richards worked more selectively in acting and voice roles, and his public profile has often been shaped as much by his Seinfeld legacy as by later appearances. Michael Richards effectively ended his career and withdrew from Hollywood after an explosive, racially charged tirade at a Los Angeles comedy club in November 2006. He immediately apologized on The Late Show with David Letterman, but the damage to his public image was permanent. Richards largely retreated from public life and the entertainment industry in the aftermath, later describing his long absence as a period where he “canceled himself out”.
