Chris Columbus (born 10 September 1958) is an American filmmaker best known for directing and producing some of the most popular family films of the last few decades. He first broke through as a screenwriter with Gremlins (1984) and The Goonies (1985), before becoming a major director with Home Alone (1990) and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992). Columbus later directed Mrs. Doubtfire (1993) and helped launch two major franchises by directing the first two Harry Potter films, Harry Potter and the Philosopherโs Stone (2001) and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002).
Alongside directing, he has had a long producing career through his company 1492 Pictures, backing a wide range of projects for both studios and streaming platforms. Known for clear, audience-friendly storytelling and a strong sense of warmth and pace, Columbus has remained a significant figure in mainstream entertainment cinema, particularly in family and coming-of-age film.
