12 Monkeys is a 1995 science-fiction thriller directed by Terry Gilliam and inspired by Chris Marker’s short film La Jetée. Starring Bruce Willis, Madeleine Stowe, Brad Pitt and Christopher Plummer, the film follows James Cole, a convict from a plague-ravaged future who is sent back in time to gather information about the virus that destroyed civilisation. What makes the film so memorable is the way it blends dystopian science fiction, psychological instability and noir-like paranoia, leaving the viewer constantly unsure of what is real, what is memory, and what may already be inevitable. Brad Pitt’s manic performance as Jeffrey Goines also became one of the film’s most celebrated elements and helped cement its lasting cult reputation.
Although the story is largely associated with Philadelphia, the production used a combination of Philadelphia, Baltimore and parts of New Jersey to create its fractured urban world. Key Philadelphia scenes were shot around City Hall and Penn Square, while the bleak institutional atmosphere of the psychiatric hospital was created using locations such as Eastern State Penitentiary and Girard College. Baltimore supplied many of the film’s grander and more eccentric settings, including the Garrett Jacobs Mansion on West Mount Vernon Place, used as the home of Dr Goines, as well as the Senator Theatre and other city locations that helped shape the film’s distinctive visual texture. The climactic airport sequence combined exteriors at Baltimore-Washington International Airport with interiors filmed inside the former Reading Terminal section of the Pennsylvania Convention Center, while some of the rougher, abandoned-looking environments were shot in Camden, New Jersey. Altogether, these locations give the film a layered and uneasy sense of place, mixing monumental civic architecture, decaying institutions and strange transitional spaces in a way that perfectly suits Gilliam’s unsettling vision of time, memory and collapse.

As a filming location, Eastern State Penitentiary is used in three feature films: 12 Monkeys, Return to Paradise, and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.
Garrett Jacobs Mansion
The Garrett Jacobs Mansion has been used in productions as Bedroom Window, Clara’s Heart, Her Alibi, The Accidental Tourist, He Said, She Said, Major League II, 12 Monkeys, Diner, Species II, and My One and Only.
